Bulungan combines striking limestone and rock landscapes with a historic sultanate site and cultural experiences of the Dayak Kenyah. Those looking for hotels in Bulungan can choose the focus of their trip: a summit climb, a waterfall, a coastal visit, or insights into history and local performances.

Natural Features and Hiking Experiences

Gunung Putih is a natural attraction in Bulungan Regency, distinguished by striking limestone formations. The climb to the summit is considered a challenging but rewarding hiking adventure. The natural experience includes not only the rocky landscape but also the route to the top. As trail conditions can change, check the latest information before setting out.

Batu Tumpuk is also a natural attraction in Bulungan Regency, known for its tall, naturally formed stacks of rock. Some of the rocks have large openings that visitors can walk through and photograph. The focus here is on the shapes and passages in the rock, while at Gunung Putih the summit climb offers a hiking experience of its own. Batu Tumpuk has toilets, a parking area and a place to buy snacks. These facilities may change; check briefly before your visit to see what is currently available.

Coastal Visit and Waterfall

Pantai Tanah Kuning II has a four-level observation tower that can also be used as a rest stop. You can reach the site by motorcycle or car. There is a mosque and a pavilion for resting on site. Access and facilities may change.

Air Terjun KM 18 is located along the Bulungan–Berau road in Desa Jelarai, Kecamatan Tanjung Selor, Bulungan Regency. The waterfall is 15 meters high and surrounded by natural forest and striking rock formations. Here, the waterfall’s height, forest and rocks define the nature experience, while the observation tower and rest stop are the main attractions at Pantai Tanah Kuning II. The sites therefore offer different reasons to choose a trip, without requiring them to be visited together.

History and Culture

Masjid Sultan Kasimuddin is a historic mosque in Bulungan Regency. It was established during the reign of Sultan Maulana Muhammad Kasimuddin (1901–1925). Sultan Maulana Muhammad Kasimuddin is buried in the mosque’s western courtyard; the surrounding graves belong to the royal family. Its founding period, burial site and royal graves connect a visit to the mosque with the history of the sultanate.

Desa Wisata Metun Sajau is a tourism village of the Dayak Kenyah in Kecamatan Tanjung Palas Timur, Bulungan Regency. Its offerings include traditional games and old-style dance performances presented by the local tourism group. The program combines taking part in the games with watching the dances. During the performances, visitors are served local farm produce, including cassava, peanuts, corn and bananas. The produce served may vary from one visit to another.
