Ambarawa is best explored through its railway history: two tourist train rides offer different routes and types of trains. On the Ambarawa–Tuntang route, you can take a round trip on a steam locomotive or a historic diesel train. Timetables and availability may vary. The other tourist route runs from Ambarawa via Jambu to Bedono and back; it is operated by a rack steam locomotive on a rack railway. The operator describes this rack railway as the only one of its kind still in operation in Indonesia; this status may change. Check with the operator for the route’s current operating status. Two practical differences to consider are the destination and the type of traction: the first route offers a choice of steam locomotive or historic diesel train, while rack railway technology defines the ride on the second route.

Railway Collection and Station History

The Ambarawa Museum displays railway collections from the Dutch East Indies period through the years before Indonesia’s independence. They include 26 steam locomotives, four diesel locomotives, five passenger cars, and six freight cars from various regions. The collection thus covers different types of locomotives as well as passenger and freight cars. The station building was originally constructed at the direction of King Willem I to facilitate military transport. In 1976, Central Java Governor Soepardjo Rustam designated Ambarawa Station as a railway museum. The collection and the station’s later conversion to a museum offer two historical perspectives: the period before independence and the station’s repurposing in 1976.

An Architectural Look at Central Java

The Isdiman Museum is a visitor attraction with educational offerings. It takes the form of a Joglo building, a style associated with Central Javanese architecture. Unlike the railway museum, it puts architecture in the foreground. The museum’s educational offering therefore adds a distinct cultural focus alongside the railway and collection themes.

More Experiences in Ambarawa Municipality

A walking Way of the Cross runs through Ambarawa Municipality. It begins at Pasturan Paroki Santo Yusuf Ambarawa, its first station, and then passes through rice fields, past homes, and through cultivated land. The route is about 1.2 kilometers long. Gua Maria Kerep, a Catholic prayer and pilgrimage site, is also located in Kerep, Kelurahan Panjang, Kecamatan Ambarawa. It is home to a 42-meter-high statue of the Virgin Mary. The two sites offer different religious experiences: the Way of the Cross is a route with stations and stretches through the landscape, while Gua Maria Kerep is a prayer and pilgrimage site with a large statue of Mary.

Kampoeng Rawa Ambarawa is also a visitor attraction in the municipality. It is managed by twelve groups of farmers and fishers from Desa Bejalen and Kelurahan Tambakboyo. From there, visitors can see rice fields, mountains, and Lake Rawa Pening. The site highlights both these landscape views and its management by groups from the farming and fishing communities.
