Nasi Grombyang at Alun-Alun and the Sarung Goyor tradition give Pemalang two specific points of reference for cuisine and handicrafts. Other cultural, coastal and activity destinations are located across the wider Pemalang destination, each in its own named place within the regency. This makes it possible to distinguish the town of Pemalang from the regional destinations without combining them into a single route.

Food and Handicrafts

Nasi Grombyang is a dish made with broth and buffalo or beef. It is served at Grombyang Pak Roji restaurant on Jl. Mochtar near Alun-Alun Pemalang. This links a specific dish to a named address.

For Sarung Goyor, the focus is on where the makers came from and how production later spread: the makers originally came from Desa Wanarejan Utara; later, production spread to Kelurahan Beji and the surrounding areas. Both areas are three kilometers east of Alun-Alun Pemalang. These details therefore connect the makers’ place of origin with other named places of production, without attributing the start of production to any one of them.

Culture Across the Wider Pemalang Destination

In the destination’s surrounding area, in Desa Sarwodadi in Pemalang Regency, Kesenian Brendung is a local art form: a mystical puppet performance. It is therefore a distinct cultural point of reference outside Pemalang’s town center.

In the wider Pemalang destination, Benowo Park is located in Desa Penggarit, Kecamatan Taman. The tomb of Pangeran Benowo is situated there and is considered a religious tourism site. Once a month, the Pasar Kamis Wage takes place in the park on Thursday Wage, according to the Javanese calendar. If this event matters to your travel plans, check the date in advance. Another sacred pilgrimage site is Makam Syekh Maulana Syamsudin in the Tanjungsari area of Desa Sugihwaras, on Java’s north coast.

The performing arts also offer different ways to experience the region’s culture. Seni Krangkeng from Desa Asemdoyong dates back to the time of the Mataram Kingdom. The art form was originally used to train in self-defense and developed into a performance combining dance, Pencak Silat and acrobatics. Tari Selendang Pemalang draws movement elements from Yogyakarta, Surakarta, Banyumas and Sunda. Silakupang, in turn, combines Sintren, Laes, Kuntulan and Kuda Kepang in a joint performance. These forms differ both in their components and in how they developed.

Coast and Activities Across Pemalang

Pantai Joko Tingkir is located in the Nyamplungsari area, 17 kilometers east of Pemalang city. Its black sand stretches along the entire beach and is characteristic of Java’s north coast. At Pantai Widuri, visitors can take photos on a wooden pier or go on a sightseeing boat trip. The options described thus range from a distinctive coastal feature to activities on the water.

Other scenic destinations include Hutan Mangrove Mojo, a tourist site in Desa Mojo, Kecamatan Ulujami. Bukit Tangkeban is located in Desa Nyalembeng, Kecamatan Pulosari, on the slopes of Mount Slamet. The facilities listed there include a glass bridge, a camping area, homestay-style accommodation and horse riding. Facilities can change, so check their current status before visiting.

The options for active pursuits vary considerably: Rainbow Rafting Pemalang offers a six-kilometer rafting route with 18 rapids, as well as facilities for outdoor activities, camping and paintball. Gunung Gajah has short hikes over challenging and extremely rocky terrain. The Via Ferrata at Bukit Mendelem leads over 420 steps to the summit. These specific route and terrain descriptions help distinguish the activities without assuming that any one is suitable for a particular visitor.

Zatobay Waterboom is also part of the wider Pemalang destination. Its swimming facilities include a children’s pool and other pools, including one with a tipping bucket, a lazy river, an Olympic-size pool, a women’s pool and a sports pool.

More Dishes from Pemalang

Across the wider Pemalang destination, Lontong Dekem adds to the culinary overview. It is served in a container made of banana leaves and includes sliced lontong, a yellow coconut milk sauce similar to curry, grated coconut, crushed crackers and fried shallots. Ogel-ogel is made from glutinous rice flour, tapioca flour, egg, sugar, salt and cheese, mixed into an elastic dough. Kamir, in turn, is considered an inheritance of the Arab descendants who live in Kelurahan Mulyoharjo, also known as Kampung Arab. The three dishes show different sides of Pemalang cuisine: a combination with sauce and accompaniments, a pastry made from elastic dough, and a dish with a named cultural connection.
