Hand-drawn and hand-stamped batik are among the most important pillars of Pekalongan’s economy; design and production are also part of the city’s identity. You can explore this connection from several angles: Kampung Batik Kauman brings batik together with history and architecture, while offerings around the city provide insights into production, exhibitions and creating your own batik. The Pekalongan Mangrove Park offers a nature-focused experience.

Batik and history in Kauman

Kampung Batik Kauman was inaugurated in 2007 and selected as one of Indonesia’s best national tourism villages. Here, batik tradition meets other cultural themes. The Masjid Agung Al-Jami in Kampung Batik Kauman was built in 1852 and is one of Java’s oldest mosques. Omah Lawang Songo is a well-known architectural style found among the old homes of batik artisans in Kampoeng Batik Kauman.

The practical side of the craft is also part of what’s on offer: Omah Kreatif in Kampoeng Batik Kauman has batik workshops and exhibition spaces. The facility was inaugurated in 2018. You can shape your visit around different cultural interests—whether that means exploring historic buildings and architecture or focusing on batik design and exhibitions.

Batik experiences around the city

In Pekalongan, visitors can watch batik being made in the Pesindon Batik Village. Batik Pesindon has exhibition spaces and workshops where batik products can be purchased. Watching the craft and shopping are two different ways to engage with local craftsmanship.

The Batik Museum Pekalongan received a UNESCO award for “Best Practices and Batik Conservation.” Visitors can learn about batik there with the help of a guide, books and documentaries. They can also make batik themselves and take their own work home. The museum combines information about the craft with a hands-on activity.

Another recurring batik event is the Kauman Batik Art Festival (KBAF). The festival is held every October to mark National Batik Day. If you’d like to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific event dates in advance.

Mangrove park or leisure facilities

The Pekalongan Mangrove Park is a mangrove conservation area. The park’s visitor facilities also include an observation tower. The park offers a nature-focused experience alongside the city’s batik culture.

Also in the city is Wisata Pantai Pasir Kencana, Pekalongan’s seawater leisure park and the largest of its kind in Indonesia. Its facilities include a promenade, a plaza, an amphitheater, a cultural stage, a flower garden and a playground. The two destinations offer different experiences: the Mangrove Park is defined by its conservation role, while Pasir Kencana is centered on leisure facilities.

Local drinks and dishes

Soto Pekalongan, also known as Tauto, is made with sweet tauco. In the city, the dish is available at food stalls around Pekalongan Square, Sorogenen and Jetayu. Kopi Tahlil is a popular Pekalongan drink made with coffee, spices and ginger. The two specialties offer different ways to explore the local cuisine: Tauto is a dish made with sweet tauco, while Kopi Tahlil is spiced coffee with ginger.
