In Batang Regency, travel themes range from a coastal bay framed by hills to waterfalls, tea plantations and a distinctive batik tradition. First, consider which focus you want to shape your stay. This will help you match the location of a holiday rental with the places you plan to visit.
Batik, Traditions and Cultural Heritage
Batik Rifa'iyah is a distinctive cultural feature of Batang Regency. In 2025, Indonesia’s Ministry of Culture recognised the tradition as intangible cultural heritage of Indonesia. It traces its roots to the legacy of Syekh KH. Ahmad Rifa'i and serves as a medium for Islamic preaching. During its production, Javanese or Arabic Kidung songs are performed, containing advice about people and the environment. A three-nation batik pattern is another characteristic feature. In Kalipucang Wetan, a gallery displays Batik Rifa'iyah works and motifs for visitors. Check opening hours before visiting.
Local traditions can also shape your travel plans. Lomban is an annual traditional rowing parade and rowing competition. In Klidang, it takes place every year on the ninth day of the month of Syawal, the eighth day after the Eid al-Fitr celebration. As the date follows the Islamic calendar, it falls on a different date in the Gregorian calendar each year. If you want to experience Lomban, check the event date before travelling.
The traditional Tradisi Kliwonan is associated with the night of Friday Kliwon. It includes a night market with rides, food, plants and goods, visited by locals and visitors from other cities. As this description does not specify a particular event date, check the current dates in advance. Makam Auliya Wonobodro offers another way to explore history: the burial complex is a historic Tanah Perdikan, meaning an area that was exempt from taxes because of its service to a kingdom or government. The graves there include those of Syeikh Maulana Maghribi, Syeikh Sunan Kudus, Syeikh Bandi Maktis, Syeikh Fakir Sugih, Syeikh Ki Ageng Pekalongan and Syeikh Ki Ageng Wonobodro. The grave of Syech Tholabuddin is in Pekuncen, in the cemetery near the Masin village office in Warungasem District.
Coast, Hot Springs and Waterfalls
Pantai Ujungnegoro is in Kandeman District, about 14 kilometres northeast of Batang city. The coast lies in a bay surrounded by hills. Below the cliff, a cave and coral rocks serve as a fishing area. Those interested in this coastal landscape will find a different focus here than among the cultural traditions inland.
Another distinctive landscape feature is Pemandian Air Panas Sangubanyu in Pesanggrahan village, Bawang District, about 50 kilometres south of the capital of Batang Regency. There, a hot spring emerges from rocks west of a river that forms the boundary between Batang Regency and Kendal Regency. Curug Gombong comprises two waterfalls: Curug Lanang above and Curug Wadon below. A concrete staircase and a footpath of about ten minutes lead to both. Curug Kanoman, meanwhile, is seven metres high; visitors can swim in the clear water beneath the waterfall.
Tea Plantations, Activities and Regional Cuisine
At Desa Wisata Besani, visitors can cycle among green tea plantations and try traditional games, including Cublak-cublak Suweng, sack races, Dakon and skipping rope. The natural attraction Curug Dewi Besani can also be included in a visit to Desa Wisata Besani. In Pandansari, Pandansari River Tubing follows an irrigation canal through rice fields. Visitors can also camp there and take part in outdoor activities. These offerings are quite different: Besani focuses on tea plantations and traditional games, while Pandansari offers outdoor and water-based activities.
The local cuisine also provides specific ideas for choosing your travel interests. Lontong Lemprak consists of lontong and local chicken in a spiced broth. The name refers to the dish being eaten seated cross-legged on a mat. Serabi Kalibeluk comes in a brown version with palm sugar and a white version with granulated sugar. Kalibeluk village in Warungasem District is considered the origin of this snack.
