Kuta combines beach activities with memorial sites and a history that dates back to the Dutch colonial period. When choosing your destination, you can consider whether you’re most interested in time by the coast, historical topics, or both.

Beach and waves at Pantai Kuta

Pantai Kuta is in southern Bali. Its white sand is soft and clean, and the sea displays gradients of color. The beach is known for its large, challenging waves; at the same time, relatively low waves along the Kuta coast are suitable for people learning to surf. Conditions at sea vary. Activities include surfing, sunbathing, swimming, and beach volleyball. Surfing and swimming are options in the water, while sunbathing and beach volleyball offer ways to spend time on the beach.

Memorials and history

A memorial ceremony for the victims is held every year at Monumen Ground Zero, also called Monumen Bom Bali I. The monument is on Jalan Legian in Kuta. It is considered a historical tourism destination in Bali. If you plan to travel specifically for the ceremony, check the date in advance, as schedules may vary.

Kuta was the site of the 1849 Peace of Kuta, which ended the conflict between the Dutch colonial government and the kings of Bali. During the Dutch colonial period, Kuta was also a well-known port visited by many foreign traders; it was very important to the economy of the Kingdom of Badung. The area around Kuta is also associated with the 1906 Puputan War, in which residents of Badung fought against the colonial power.

Another reason to visit

Vihara Dharmayana, also called Kongco Leeng Gwan Kuta, is on Blambangan Street in Kuta. Visitors can stop by for a walk and some quiet time. This makes it a different kind of visit from the annual memorial ceremony at Monumen Ground Zero.

Getting there and finding your way around

The drive from Ngurah Rai Airport to Kuta takes about ten minutes by car or taxi; traffic affects the actual journey time. Keep this in mind when planning. Traveling by ship from cities such as Surabaya, Lombok, Makassar, Ambon, and Merauke involves going through Benoa Port in Denpasar. From there, continue overland to Kuta; connections and travel times may vary.

Waterbom Bali is at Jl. Kartika Plaza, Kuta, Kec. Kuta, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361, Indonesia. Check the operator’s website before setting out.

Choosing a hotel based on your travel interests

Your route can also affect your plans: travel from the airport by car or taxi, while a ship journey via Benoa is followed by an overland leg.
