The Körtvélyesi Nature Trail is on the slope above Lake Zalacsány. Its forest path is 3.1 km long; eleven information boards connect tree species and the landscape with forest management. Zalacsány also has a lake, a castle that operates as a hotel, and other historic sights.
Forest Nature Trail and Lake
The Körtvélyesi Nature Trail follows a forest path covered with wood chips. Eleven boards introduce forest management under the conversion system, characteristic tree species, features of the landscape, and the public-benefit activities of Zalaerdő Zrt. Visitors interested in forestry and the landscape will find these topics brought together along the trail: the boards complement the route with insights into tree species, the landscape and forest management.
Access is via the Zalacsány recreation park; walk along the lake embankment to get there. The trail is on the slope above Lake Zalacsány, which is also used by anglers and boaters. This brings different activities together: the forest path and its forestry themes, and activities on the water. If you are planning to fish or go boating, check the current conditions in advance, as they may vary depending on operations.
Cycle Route and Other Local Features
An existing local cycle route follows the former railway line on the Zalaapáti–Zalaszentgrót connection through the northern outskirts of Zalacsány and continues to the border of Kehidakustány. The two routes are easy to distinguish for orientation: the cycle route follows the former railway line through the northern outskirts, while the Körtvélyesi Nature Trail is a 3.1 km forest path on the slope above the lake.
In Zalacsány, Zala Springs Golf Resort is classified as a sports and tourism complex. If you would like to include the resort in your plans, check the current information about its facilities and access before making a decision.
Castle History and Sights
Batthyány Castle was built in the Neo-Baroque style in the late 19th century, has been renovated, and currently operates as a hotel. It took on its present form in 1913, when Batthyány Pál, Lord Lieutenant of Zala County, and his wife, Countess Inkei Karolina, had it rebuilt in a style combining Baroque and Art Nouveau elements. Its construction and later remodelling are two distinct stages in its history. If you are considering the castle as a place to stay, check availability for your travel dates.
The early 19th-century Csány family mausoleum is also one of Zalacsány’s sights. It is located in the village cemetery. The Malatinszky–Batthyány manor house is another sight; alongside the castle’s well-documented history, these add further named historic places to the local itinerary.
Zala as a Regional Setting
In the wider destination of Zala, the focus expands from local forest and castle stories to wine country and protected waters. The Zalai Borvidék wine region developed on the slopes and plateaus of the Zalai-dombság hills and on the northwestern slopes of the Keszthelyi-hegység. It comprises two wine districts and 38 settlements. This offers a way to consider wine-growing in its wider regional context, rather than associating it with a single place alone.
The Kis-Balaton offers a different perspective: it is Zala’s largest body of water, is strictly protected and covers 14,745 hectares. It is also the setting for István Fekete’s classic novels Tüskevár and Téli berek. In Zalaszántó, the Kotsy water mill also houses a working 390 cm overshot waterwheel mechanism. The wine country, protected waters and historic technology add further regional highlights to Zalacsány’s distinctive offerings.
