Hilly terrain, green pastures and dense, unspoilt forests define Zalaigrice. You can also get to know the village through its history of settlement and community life, including local events. The Church of St. Anne and its park provide a clear landmark in the village centre; the wider Zala destination also offers a regional perspective.

Village Centre and Landscape

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Anne and the park around it are located where the roads of Zalaigrice meet. This area forms the centre of the village and provides a specific reference point in its townscape. The landscape, meanwhile, is defined by hilly terrain, green pastures and dense, unspoilt forests. These offer different reasons for choosing the destination: you can focus on the village centre or on the hilly landscape with its pastures and forests.

Traces of a Medieval Settlement

The medieval settlement of Zalaigrice was probably located near an Árpád-era church on the site of today’s cemetery. Pottery fragments found near the cemetery support this assumption. The historic settlement site in the cemetery grounds should be distinguished from today’s centre around the Church of St. Anne. The village’s history therefore includes both a probable earlier settlement site and a clearly identified landmark in the present-day townscape.

Events Throughout the Year

The municipality of Zalaigrice invites visitors to celebrations, processions, balls and other events. These various events take place throughout the year, from January to December. If you plan to travel for a particular festival, check its specific date before booking: events taking place throughout the year does not replace planning for an individual event.

Zala as a Wider Region

The wider Zala destination includes the Zalai Borvidék wine region. It developed on the slopes and plateaus of the Zalai-dombság hills and on the northwestern slopes of the Keszthelyi-hegység mountains. The wine region comprises two wine-growing districts and 38 settlements. This regional perspective differs from Zalaigrice’s local profile: hills, pastures and forests define the landscape here, while the wine region describes a wider area.

Another landscape in Zala is Kis-Balaton, the largest body of water in the destination. It is strictly protected, covers 14,745 hectares and is the setting of István Fekete’s classic novels Tüskevár and Téli berek. The regional perspective thus ranges from wine-growing landscapes to a protected body of water with a literary connection. This adds to the picture of Zalaigrice without conflating these different themes into a single description of the village.

Tailor Your Accommodation Search

When looking for a holiday apartment, it is useful to distinguish between Zalaigrice and the wider Zala destination. If you are primarily interested in the village centre, local history, the hilly countryside or municipal events, use Zalaigrice as your search location. If your travel plans also include the Zalai Borvidék or Kis-Balaton, keep Zala in mind as the regional framework.
