Újudvar combines the history of the Order of Saint John with crosses, a tall TV tower, and Csibiti-tó. This gives you a clear choice when planning your trip: should your focus be on local history, the memorial markers, or the landscape?

Monastery, church, and crosses

The Order of Saint John built a monastery and a parish church in Újudvar. The monastery is first documented in a charter dating from 1236. This early reference gives the town’s history a clear chronological anchor.

The two crosses add different details to the story. Amerikás kereszt is made entirely of sandstone; Göncz kereszt was erected in the early 19th century. For one cross, the material is the focus; for the other, its date. Anyone interested in local memorial markers will find two distinct aspects here, rather than the same historical reference twice.

TV tower and Csibiti-tó

Újudvar’s TV tower is 206 metres tall. Its height adds a technical note alongside the town’s history and church history. This striking measurement offers a different way to understand the place than the monastery’s history or the crosses’ dates.

Csibiti-tó lies in Csibiti-völgy and is an artificial reservoir fed by the surrounding springs. This distinguishes it from a naturally formed lake: its setting in the valley is linked to its creation as a reservoir. For choosing a theme in Újudvar, it offers a distinct landscape focus alongside the town’s historic landmarks and the TV tower.

The wider travel destination of Zala

Those looking at Zala as a wider travel destination will find other regional themes. The Zalai Borvidék developed on the slopes and plateaus of Zalai-dombság and on the northwestern slopes of Keszthelyi-hegység. It comprises two wine-growing districts and 38 settlements. Viticulture is therefore a broad regional focus, quite different in scale from the local features associated with Újudvar.

Another landscape feature is Kis-Balaton, Zala’s largest body of water. It is strictly protected and covers 14,745 hectares. It is also the setting for István Fekete’s classic novels Tüskevár and Téli berek. In the wider travel destination of Zala, this connects a large protected area with a literary reference.

A technical cultural attraction is another regional theme: at Kotsy-vízimalom in Zalaszántó, you can see a working 390 cm overshot waterwheel mechanism. Alongside the wine-growing landscape and Kis-Balaton, this example shows another, culturally shaped side of Zala. In the wider travel destination of Zala, Azáleás-völgy in the Alsóerdő of Zalaegerszeg adds a seasonal landscape highlight in spring.
