A renovated watermill with a museum, a historic wine cellar and trails with very different levels of difficulty: Gyenesdiás brings together culture, landscape and outdoor activities. When planning your stay, you can choose between exhibitions and crafts, viewpoints, activities at Diási Játékstrand and hikes.

Culture, Crafts and History

The Diás Watermill complex was completely renovated by 2021. It houses a bakery museum, the Festetics Herb Garden and a herbarium. The complex brings together several themes in one place: baking, plants and the history of the mill.

At Pásztorház, a traditional farmhouse provides a setting for further discoveries. It is furnished with items from the period between the two world wars. Activities include craft classes using a working oven. The archaeological exhibition covers an Avar military leader, a grave that remained untouched until it was excavated, and finds from the Keszthely culture.

Darnay Pince also combines history with regional cuisine. The wooden wine cellar dates from 1644, has been preserved from the period of Ottoman rule, and is considered an outstanding example of vernacular architecture. At Darnay Pince and the event barn, visitors can sample local wines and dishes.

The site of the Nepomuki Szent János spring and monument includes a statue erected in 1828. It was restored when the spring was renovated in 2000. The dates mark two distinct points in the site's history.

Landscape and Viewpoints

The Nature House Visitor Center introduces visitors to the wildlife and natural assets of the Keszthely Hills through interactive displays, photographs, audio and visual effects, and lifelike dioramas. The neighboring Festetics Imre Animal Park covers 4.2 hectares and offers the chance to encounter wild and domestic animals.

A distinctive feature of the landscape is Kűmell: this two-part dolomite outcrop is almost 30 m high and rises directly above Gyenesdiás. The rocky area is difficult for people to access. For a different perspective on the landscape, visit the Festetics Lookout Tower, rebuilt in 2000. Its panorama stretches from Keszthely Bay to the valley-carved ridges of the Keszthely Hills.

At Nagymező, there are equipped fire pits, tables, benches, a football pitch and a shelter for day-trippers. The facilities make it a place to take a break outdoors. Aquatika offers another viewpoint: its rooftop serves as a terrace with views of Lake Balaton and Keszthely Bay. Aquatika also has a bicycle rest and charging station with a bike rack for 12 bicycles, three outdoor charging points and a bicycle repair station.

Choose Activities and Trails to Suit You

Diási Játékstrand offers a range of sports and games: beach volleyball, beach football and streetball courts, as well as Teqball, table tennis and other games. Pedal boats, kayaks and SUP boards are available to rent; availability may vary by season. Family-friendly services and entertaining animation programs round out the offer, although programs may vary seasonally.

The Gyenesdiás Cardio Trail combines walking and exercise with information boards. Your resting heart rate is measured at the start, and your exercise heart rate at subsequent stations. If you are interested in a longer hike, you can compare two routes using their stated details. The Family Circular Route starts at the Tourinform office in Gyenesdiás, is 8.6 km long, takes two hours, has an elevation gain of 350 m and is classified as easy.

The Darnay-Dornyai Béla Memorial Trail also starts at the Tourinform office and connects lookout towers in the Keszthely Hills. It is 16.7 km long, with an additional 8.2 km option. The route is classified as challenging. The two hikes described therefore differ in duration, length and difficulty. To find out about guided hikes around Gyenesdiás, ask the Kayak-Island team for dates; pogácsa and hot tea are served on the tours.
