Sárfimizdó can be understood through its location at the source of the Sár stream and the village’s historical landmarks. The stream is now called Sárvíz. This connection links the development of the settlement to a specific feature of the landscape; the village history adds former livelihoods, religious dedication and remembrance of war casualties.

Village History and Memorials

A historical account describes Sárfimizdó as a village of “honey givers”: in the past, its residents produced honey. In the late 16th and 17th centuries, minor nobles living in Sárfimizdó had a crowned helmet and an arm in armour holding a sabre engraved on the village seal. The symbols represented those who paid dues with their blood. These two details tell different sides of the village’s history: honey production points to a former activity, while the symbols on the seal expressed dues symbolically.

The school chapel in Sárfimizdó was consecrated in 1929 with a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In 1991, a marble column was erected on the school grounds in memory of villagers who fell in the First and Second World Wars. It is decorated with a relief by Budapest sculptor Tamás Varga. The chapel and column represent different forms of remembrance: the chapel’s religious dedication and the column’s commemoration of the war dead. The years mark these distinct points of reference: 1929 denotes the consecration, and 1991 the commemoration of those who fell in both world wars.

Vas County: More Regional Themes

The wider destination of Vas County brings together a range of nature and landscape themes. In the northwestern part of Vas County lies Írottkő Nature Park, which includes the entire 4,303-hectare Kőszeg Landscape Protection Area. In the southwest of the county, Őrség National Park, established on 1 March 2002, preserves and presents the natural, ethnographic and cultural-historical values of Őrség. These offer distinct thematic experiences: a nature park with an associated landscape protection area, and a national park whose remit encompasses both natural and cultural heritage.

The cultural and activity themes across the wider destination of Vas County are also distinct. Vasi Skanzen presents the rural way of life and folk architecture of Vas County over the past two centuries. Since opening in 1973, it has rescued and rebuilt 43 buildings from 27 settlements. The Nádasdy Ferenc Museum displays art and cultural-history objects from the castles and mansions of Vas County, as well as an exhibition on the history of the Hussars, described as unique in Hungary. For cyclists, the Termál Kerékpáros Túraút in Vas County leads to five thermal bath complexes and combines cycling with visits to architectural and natural landmarks and other thermal baths. The Vulkán Tour leads to Kis-Somlyó, Ság-hegy and Belső-hegy.
