Szarvaskend brings together two distinct church histories, the history of the Sibrik family and protected natural areas in its northern outskirts. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can first decide whether local history, architecture or the landscape is most important to your stay.

The castle and churches tell the story of the town

The Sibrik family shaped Szarvaskend’s history and life for centuries; the estate there had belonged to the family since the 15th century. Sibrik Castle is listed in the national register of monuments. It housed a school for many years and is now also used as the seat of a joint municipal office. The building thus brings together local history and different phases of use: the school belongs to the past, while its administrative function is part of the present.

The listed Roman Catholic Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in the late 18th century in the late Baroque style. Its altarpiece is by Isvtán Dorfmeister. In 1887, the Lutheran congregation had a church built in Szarvaskend. It was later demolished, leaving only the tower; the church was rebuilt in 2002. These building histories highlight different aspects: a late Baroque church on the one hand, and a story of construction, demolition and reconstruction on the other.

Five old cellars on Szarvaskend’s Weinberghügel (Vineyard Hill) are also listed in the register of monuments. Together with the churches and Sibrik Castle, they represent different buildings and periods in the town’s history.

Protected landscape in the northern outskirts

Parts of Szarvaskend’s northern outskirts are part of the Natura 2000 network of protected areas. These include the Csörnöc Valley, floodplain meadows, forests on the northern slope and areas along the streams that flow into the Csörnöc. This natural area thus encompasses a valley, meadows, hillside forests and streams. In addition, a large part of Szarvaskend’s administrative area, together with the protected natural areas, is part of a nationally designated landscape protection area. The two designations differ in scale: the Natura 2000 site lies in the northern outskirts, while the landscape protection area covers a large part of the administrative area.

Traditions and regional context

Harvest festivals and processions have a long tradition in Szarvaskend. If you would like to plan your stay around one of these events, check the dates for your travel period in advance.

Vas County also provides regional context: within the broader destination of Vas County, Írottkő Nature Park is located in the county’s northwestern part. The park includes the entire 4,303-hectare Kőszeg Landscape Protection Area. These details describe the landscape of Vas County, while the protected areas in Szarvaskend’s northern outskirts provide the local natural setting. Another regional activity in the broader destination of Vas County is the Termál Kerékpáros Túraút (Thermal Cycling Route), which leads to five spa complexes in Vas County. The route combines cycling with visits to architectural and natural attractions, as well as other spas.
