Csömötei-hegy is the focal point of Lukácsháza’s landscape and history: vineyards and orchards, a larch-wood observation tower and traces of the area’s wine-growing past all come together here. If you are looking for a specific connection to the place for your trip, you will find it in this combination of cultural landscape and historic buildings.
Csömötei-hegy: vineyards and observation tower
Csömötei-hegy lies west of Lukácsháza, one kilometer from the built-up area. Vineyards and orchards cover the hill. At its summit stands a 12-meter-high larch-wood observation tower, inaugurated on May 22, 2010. The section of the Via Sancti Martini between Kőszeg and Szombathely passes directly by the tower. This provides a specific route connection for locating the hill, without conflating the landscape with the route.
Wine-growing history and local culture
Next to the observation tower stands a roughly 150-year-old vineyard house, maintained by the Lukácsházi Borbarát Hölgyek. A historic wine cellar has also been preserved on Csömötei-hegy. In the past, the vineyard levy had to be paid there by St. George’s Day. The house and cellar offer two different glimpses into vineyard use: one is a building that is still maintained today; the other recalls an earlier levy rule. At events featuring walks through the vineyards, participants can also enjoy culinary and gastronomic offerings.
In Nagycsömöte stands the Szent-Rókus cemetery chapel. It may have been built in the 16th century during a plague epidemic. On the outskirts of Lukácsháza, a Tájház is being built on the banks of the Gyöngyös patak, at the foot of the vineyard. Alongside traces of wine-growing, a chapel and another site still under development contribute to the cultural setting of Lukácsháza.
