Gór combines a distinctive river landscape with historical traces from very different periods. To the north, the Répce and its associated marsh meadows border the area; on a summit plateau, the remains of a Celtic hillfort are still visible on the surface today. This gives you two clearly defined focal points when planning your trip: the natural environment and archaeology. There is also a route that includes Gór as it passes through several settlements.

The Répce and the northern landscape

The Répce is an important natural asset and, at the same time, a defining part of Gór’s cultural landscape. To the north, the river and its associated marsh meadows border the area. In addition, areas of special importance for nature conservation extend into Gór and fall under the remit of the Fertő-Hanság National Park Directorate. The river, wetlands and nature conservation thus offer three specific ways to explore the area. If you like to factor the landscape into your choice of destination, you can also understand Gór through this northern natural environment.

In the wider destination of Vas County, former watermills have been preserved along the Répce. They add to the river’s role as part of the region’s cultural heritage.

The Celtic hillfort and the history of the castle

An archaeological highlight is a 2.5-hectare summit plateau in Gór. Around 330 BC (± 60 years), the Celts surrounded the plateau with a hillfort; the remains of the fortifications are still visible on the surface today. The date is approximate, not a single year of construction, and helps place the site within a very early historical period. A much later landmark is the listed castle of the Guary family, which stands on 15th-century foundations. Comparing the two reveals two historical periods in the area’s past that are far apart in time: the Celtic hillfort and the castle’s foundations.

A route through several settlements

The “Látványos élménytúra” route also passes through Gór: it runs from Bük (Bükfürdő) via Bő, Gór, Szeleste and Répceszentgyörgy, then returns to Bük (Bükfürdő) via Gór and Bő. Gór appears twice along the route, first before Szeleste and then again after Répceszentgyörgy. This regional route differs from a stay focused on the hillfort, castle or landscape in Gór: it includes several named settlements in the itinerary. Check the route conditions before making specific plans, as they may change.

Choose the focus of your stay

When deciding whether Gór is a suitable place to stay overnight for your plans, it helps to first consider the purpose of your trip. The river landscape and marsh meadows offer a different focus from the archaeological hillfort or the listed castle; the route, in turn, takes in several settlements. This can help you decide whether to build your stay around a local attraction or a route connecting several stops. This distinction makes it easier to search for a holiday apartment in Gór and match your choice of destination to your interests in the area.
