Zomba combines Baroque cultural heritage with winemaking and a landscape of hills, valleys, streams and standing bodies of water. The town is part of the Szekszárd wine region. This gives it a clear profile for planning a trip: alongside religious art and historic furnishings, agriculture also plays a role. There is also a craft activity for children, which requires an appointment in advance.

Church Art and Historic Pharmacy Furnishings

The Roman Catholic church in Zomba preserves Baroque features and furnishings dating from the time it was built. These include altarpieces by the Austrian Capuchin artist Johann Baumgartner. The architecture and paintings thus represent two specific aspects of the same cultural heritage: the design of the church and its furnishings. The Rozsnyay Pharmacy offers a different perspective on the town’s history. It preserves the historic furnishings of its founder. These are more than 100 years old and are protected as museum artifacts. Unlike the church, the pharmacy points not to religious art but to the history of a traditional trade.

Winemaking and Landscape

Grapes are grown and wine is produced on more than 200 hectares in Zomba. In addition to being part of the Szekszárd wine region, winemaking therefore has a tangible local presence. The landscape includes hills, valleys, streams and standing bodies of water. Eleven grey poplars in the castle park are strikingly similar in height and girth; they may have been planted at the same time several centuries ago. Winemaking reflects the area’s agricultural character, while the grey poplars are a distinctive feature of a particular park. Together, these two subjects broaden the picture beyond the history of the church and pharmacy, without one replacing the other.

Crafts by Appointment

Crafts add a different kind of cultural theme. Faragó Istvánné offers craft classes for children by appointment in advance. She teaches traditional techniques using bulrush, straw and corn leaves. The focus here is not on a preserved object, but on teaching techniques and working with specific materials. If you plan to take part, arrange an appointment in advance. The contrast with the church and pharmacy is clear: those are about preserved architecture and furnishings, while this is about learning a craft practice.
