Olcsva combines a castle with several phases of construction and the Holt-Kraszna fishing lake in the heart of the village. There is also a historic landmark: the bust of Sándor Károlyi in the park south of the Reformed Church. The village’s history therefore offers both a look back at the different phases of Olcsvai Castle and a landmark with a specific location. The lake complements this historical perspective with an attraction for anglers and those seeking relaxation.

The eventful history of Olcsvai Castle

In 1561, King Ferdinand’s troops besieged and captured the fortified castle of Olcsva. The Károlyi family rebuilt Olcsvai Castle in 1699. After this reconstruction, the complex consisted of several buildings and had multiple storeys. The castle burned down in 1703; Count Sándor Károlyi had it rebuilt in 1708–1709. In February 1711, Francis II Rákóczi visited Olcsvai Castle. Between 1777 and 1791, the building complex was demolished. This sequence of dates shows several significant turning points: two phases of reconstruction were followed by the fire and, ultimately, the demolition. Different historical periods thus shaped the castle’s history, rather than one consistently unchanged architectural form.

Fishing lake and bust in the village

The Holt-Kraszna fishing lake is managed by the Olcsva Angling Association and regularly stocked with fish. It welcomes anglers and those seeking relaxation; an angling permit is required for access. If you are visiting primarily to fish, you should factor this requirement into your plans. The bust of Sándor Károlyi stands in the park south of the Reformed Church and is another named landmark in Olcsva. Unlike the castle’s history, which spans a long period, it is tied to a specific place in the park.

Cultural attractions in the wider destination of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg

Beyond Olcsva, the wider destination of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg offers its own castle-history and cultural attractions. In Vaja, the Vay-Ádám Museum Collection of the Hungarian National Museum is housed in the Renaissance-style Vay Castle. In Nyírbátor, Báthori Castle houses a permanent exhibition and a panorama display featuring members of the Báthori family in a period setting. Another highlight is Andrássy Castle in Tiszadob: it was built between 1880 and 1885 in the French Gothic style, based on plans by Alpár Ignác. Its patron was Andrássy Gyula, a former prime minister. These regional examples offer different points of focus: the museum collection and historical displays in Vaja and Nyírbátor, and castle architecture in Tiszadob. They are attractions of the wider destination, not features of Olcsva.

Landscapes in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg

The wider destination of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg also has its own natural attractions. The Bátorliget Ancient Swamp covers about 53 hectares and is strictly protected. It preserves the various stages of the vegetation and landscape history of the Alföld plain particularly well. Near Csaroda, the peat bogs of Nyíres-tó and Báb tava date back to the Ice Age. In Tiszadob, a 1,000-hectare nature reserve includes oxbow lakes, floodplain forests, and grassland. Between 80 and 90 pairs of herons nest in Tölgyes Forest. Thus, the region includes peat bogs with a long formation history as well as a landscape of oxbow lakes, floodplain forest, and grassland. These natural attractions belong to the respective places named in the wider destination.
