Nyíregyháza offers a range of highlights for a stay: the Kállay Collection focuses on the city’s history, personal mementos and historical photographs, while paths and recreational facilities shape the landscape in Sóstó and around the Bujtos Lakes.

City history at the Kállay Collection

The Kállay Collection includes personal mementos belonging to descendants of the Kállay family, historically valuable photographs, a library with 16,000 volumes and a unique medal collection. An interactive exhibition explores the history of the city of Nyíregyháza, from its beginnings to the political transition around 1989. VR headsets, quiz mats and other interactive features bring the exhibition to life. In this way, visitors can explore the city’s history through different approaches: the collection’s holdings and an exhibition focused on the city’s story.

Cycling towards Sóstógyógyfürdő

The cycling tour through the history of Nyíregyháza begins at Kossuth tér and passes Hősök tere, Bessenyei tér, Benczúr tér and Luther tér on its way towards Sóstógyógyfürdő. The route continues through the Sóstó Forest on the cycle path. The sections described connect sites from the city’s history with a route through the forest. Check route conditions before setting off.

Forest paths and a musical fountain in Sóstó

The Sóstó Forest has a 2.5-kilometre path that forms part of the so-called Kneipp therapy. The 371-hectare Sóstó Park Forest offers walking paths, an outdoor fitness area, a playground and barbecue areas. Visitors can enjoy time outdoors on a path with a specific length as well as through a range of other recreational activities.

In front of the water park in Sóstó, the musical fountain features sound and light effects across an area of 500 square metres. This offers a different focus from the forest paths: here, the fountain’s effects take centre stage, while the walking paths and Kneipp therapy offer a different way to spend time outdoors.

Paths and sports at the Bujtos Lakes

The Bujtos Lakes are connected by footpaths, boardwalks and small wooden bridges. Nearby, there is also a rubberised running track, cycle paths, outdoor fitness equipment, and a football pitch and basketball court. There are paths between the lakes as well as several opportunities for exercise nearby. If you are planning time outdoors, these options offer a different experience from the city history at the Kállay Collection and the cycling tour towards Sóstó.

More cultural destinations in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg

The wider destination of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg is also home to other distinct cultural sites. In Vaja, the Vay-Ádám Museum Collection of the Hungarian National Museum is housed in the Renaissance-style Vay Castle. The Báthori Castle in Nyírbátor has a permanent exhibition and a historical waxwork display portraying members of the Báthori family in period settings.

Another example is Andrássy Castle in Tiszadob. It was built between 1880 and 1885 in the French Gothic style by former Prime Minister Andrássy Gyula, based on plans by Alpár Ignác. These places broaden the cultural perspective on Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg, while the Kállay Collection and the paths and recreational activities described here are specific to Nyíregyháza.
