A wooden bell tower nearly 30 meters tall beside the Reformed Church is a striking example of Nyírbátor’s historic architecture. The history of the Báthori family, collections about the town, and a town promenade featuring life-size sculptures are also among the themes that shape a stay here. Other activities include horseback riding, fishing, and the Sárkány Wellness és Gyógyfürdő.

Historic Churches and Báthori Heritage

The Reformed Church was commissioned by Báthori István, Voivode of Transylvania. Construction probably began in 1484 and was completed in 1511. Beside the church stands a wooden bell tower, built from oak beams in 1640 in the Transylvanian style. It is nearly 30 meters tall and is considered Hungary’s oldest and largest wooden bell tower.

The roof structure of the Reformed Church is also a sight in its own right: visitors can reach the restored timber-framed roof structure, considered unique in Europe, via a renovated staircase and a lift in the tower. If you plan to visit, check the visiting hours in advance. A statue of Voivode Báthori István stands between the Reformed Church and Báthori Várkastély.

Rebuilt in 2006, Báthori Várkastély preserves the only section of the former castle whose standing walls retain medieval remains. A permanent exhibition explores the era and legends of the Báthori family. The castle thus brings together architectural evidence and the family’s history and traditions.

Town History on Foot and in the Museum

The 450-meter-long Várostörténeti Sétány runs between the Minorite Church and the Reformed Church and serves as a pedestrian link for residents and tourists alike. Life-size sculptures illustrate the roots of Nyírbátor’s dragon culture, the legend of Szentvér utca, and the history of the Báthori family. The route thus combines a practical function with visual storytelling about the town’s history.

The collections at the Báthori István Múzeum span archaeology, history, and ethnography, as well as weapons, fine arts, and applied arts. Permanent exhibitions include “Nyírbátor város évszázadai” and an exhibition commemorating 70 years of border guard history. Visitors interested in different aspects of the town will find broader historical and cultural themes here alongside the history of the Báthori family.

More Cultural Sites and Activities

The Greek Catholic Church is in the Baroque style; it was built in 1932 and renovated in 2013. The interior of the Minorite Church features richly decorated altars and a pulpit. The park of the Báthori István Museum is also home to a tree of life sculpture by woodcarver Schmidt Sándor. The work symbolizes the 1956 Revolution and was installed on its 50th anniversary.

The Városi Galéria features a doll exhibition with pieces from the collection of Kissné Szalontai Judit. Horseback riding is available at Fedeles Lovarda, which opened in the autumn of 2014. These cultural and active pursuits offer different ways to spend your time, so your stay need not be limited to churches and historical exhibitions.

The pools at Sárkány Wellness és Gyógyfürdő use water that rises in Nyírbátor and is known as Báthory medicinal water. It contains calcium, magnesium, and hydrogen carbonate; its dissolved salt content is 1,526 mg/l. Fishing is currently permitted at Szénaréti-tó. Day tickets are available on site, at the Csali fishing shop at the beginning of Fáy út, and at Sorompó presszó on Gyulaji út. Information about day tickets may change; check the details before your visit.
