The Szikes Sóstó and local history offer two different ways to explore Újfehértó. The lake is a nature reserve of national importance. In dry weather, its white lakebed regularly comes into view—and gave the town its name.

Salt Landscape and Birdlife

Újfehértó lies between Debrecen and Nyíregyháza, on the edge of the Nyírség toward the Hajdúság region and in the southwestern part of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County. This location places the town in its regional context; locally, the saline areas provide a distinctive natural feature. Numerous protected plant and animal species live there. Many bird species also nest or stop to rest in these areas.

Among the notable natural features is a locally protected Ice Age loess wall. Protected sand martins nest in its upper layer. Alongside the bright expanse of the lake, this brings habitats for protected species into focus. At the Szikes Sóstó, the white lakebed, regularly visible in dry weather, shapes the natural landscape; at Vadas-tó, bird migration and birdwatching take center stage.

Vadas-tó is considered a suitable excursion destination because of its size and varied surroundings. It lies on an international bird migration route and is a popular birdwatching spot. For nature enthusiasts, Újfehértó offers several distinct themes: the saline habitat, the loess wall with its sand martins, and birdwatching at Vadas-tó.

Churches and Local History

The sights in the town center are well suited to a walk exploring local history. They include public statues and monuments, as well as the centuries-old row of chestnut trees on Főtér. A church built between 1803 and 1814 stands right next to Fő tér. It was originally consecrated in 1812 in honor of All Saints; today, it is dedicated to Our Lady of Hungary.

The history of this church also includes a connection to Karol Wojtyła, later Pope John Paul II: he visited it in the late 1970s. A stained-glass window commemorates him. The churchyard of the Reformed Church is another place with notable historical details: it contains three sarcophagus-shaped tombstones from the 17th century. Their inscriptions are illegible; one stone has a visible asymmetrical floral carving.

The grave of Ferenc Silbermann in the former cemetery on Kossuth út remains a pilgrimage site. The cemetery is not open to visitors. This restriction matters when considering the town’s historic sites: not every place connected to Újfehértó’s past is open to visitors.

Museum, Sculptures and Older Traces

The Városi Múzeum opened in 1995 in a manor house dating from the second half of the 19th century. The building formerly belonged to the Grünberger family and has a vaulted colonnade. Alongside temporary exhibitions, the museum mainly presents materials on local history. If you plan to visit, it is advisable to check the current opening hours in advance.

A sculpture park is located in front of the museum. Its statues are dedicated to Mihály Nyúzó, Pál Rákóczi, István Szoboszlai Pap and Ferenc Zajti—figures associated with the town. The park adds a series of named commemorative figures to the story of local history.

An older trace runs through Újfehértó: the Csörsz-árok, also known as Ördög-árok, passes through the town. Its origin is disputed; most evidence points to a late Roman origin. This uncertainty is part of the received interpretation: a late Roman date is a likely explanation, not an undisputed dating.
