Old walnut and plum trees, protected old apple varieties and the Tisza floodplain give Kisar a strong connection to its landscape. They are joined by a nature trail, a permanent exhibition and a Reformed church dating from the 15th century. In this small area, you can encounter different aspects of the village: a traditional orchard landscape, the natural and cultural heritage of the Upper Tisza region, and a specific example of Gothic architecture.

Floodplain landscape and old apple varieties

Kisar’s Tisza floodplain is home to a traditional jungle orchard landscape. It includes old walnut and plum trees, as well as protected old apple varieties. Kisar lies entirely within the Szatmár-Beregi Tájvédelmi Körzet Landscape Protection Area. The orchard and the protected area offer two related but distinct perspectives on the landscape: traditional fruit trees and the protection of the area. Those interested in cultural landscapes will find a tangible connection to nature here, extending beyond a single attraction.

Visitor centre by the Tisza embankment

The visitor centre of the Szatmár-Beregi Nature Park is located directly by the Tisza embankment and is surrounded by an expansive green area with trees and grass. Its permanent themed exhibition presents the cultural and natural heritage of the Upper Tisza region. A visit to Kisar can therefore also include a deeper exploration of the region: the exhibition focuses on nature and culture, while the orchard landscape outside offers a tangible local connection. Visits to the centre must be arranged in advance.

The Jégmadár nature trail

The Jégmadár nature trail runs between Kisar and Panyola; its starting point in Kisar is the Ökoház. Part of the route follows the cycle path along the top of the flood-protection embankment. Knowing the starting point and route helps with orientation: you know where the trail begins in Kisar and that it connects the two villages. The embankment section is described as one stretch, not as the route of the entire trail. If you include the nature trail in your plans, you can use these details to orient yourself along the route.

Gothic architecture in Kisar

Kisar’s Reformed church was built in the Gothic style in the 15th century. Its date gives travellers with an interest in cultural history a clear point of reference. Together with the visitor centre exhibition, it creates a local cultural contrast: on one side is a medieval building, and on the other, a themed presentation of the cultural and natural heritage of the Upper Tisza region. The two subjects can be considered independently of each other in Kisar.

More highlights in the wider Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg destination

Beyond Kisar, the wider Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg destination offers other distinct cultural and natural highlights. The Renaissance Vay Castle in Vaja houses the Vay Ádám Museum Collection of the Hungarian National Museum. The Báthori Castle in Nyírbátor houses a permanent exhibition and a panopticon, where members of the Báthori family are depicted in a setting typical of their era. The two places have different focuses: a museum collection on the one hand, and a family depicted in a historical setting on the other.

The landscape attractions in the wider Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg destination also have distinct focuses. The Bátorliget Ancient Moor covers about 53 hectares and is strictly protected; it preserves the stages in the vegetation and landscape history of the Great Hungarian Plain particularly completely. Near Csaroda are the Nyíres-tó and Báb tava peat bogs, whose origins date back to the Ice Age. Near Tiszadob, a 1,000-hectare nature reserve encompasses oxbow lakes, floodplain forests and grassland. A large heron colony of 80 to 90 pairs nests in the Tölgyes Forest.

Those interested in medieval churches can also explore the northern Hungarian section of the Route of Medieval Churches in the wider destination. It connects 37 places of worship in the medieval church landscape of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg. Alongside the individual Gothic church in Kisar, this offers regional themes to explore, each with its own location and focus.
