A castle dating from the 1770s, an 8.6-hectare historic park, and a nature trail around the lake give Levelek a distinctive character. Visitors choosing this destination can treat cultural history and a waterside route as different focuses when planning their trip.

Castle and Historic Park

The eclectic-style Leveleki Molnár-kastély was built in the 1770s. The renovated castle serves as a tourism and event center for residents and visitors. If you are planning a visit, check the current visitor arrangements. The castle has an 8.6-hectare historic park. The plane trees, chestnuts, and oaks from that time can still be found there. The building and park offer two distinct aspects of local cultural heritage: the castle’s datable history and the historic park’s surviving tree species.

The Matula bácsi Nature Trail by the Lake

The Matula bácsi nature trail runs around the lake. It starts at the beginning of the dam and ends at the Halfarock apartmanház; the route can also be completed by bicycle. This makes the trail another way to include Levelek in your travel plans, alongside the cultural and historical focus of the castle and park. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

More Places to Explore in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg

Those looking beyond Levelek to the wider destination of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg will find other distinct cultural and natural attractions. The following places and landscapes offer a range of experiences, from museum collections and castle history to marshes and protected areas.

Castles and Church History

The Renaissance Vay Castle in Vaja houses the Vay-Ádám Museum Collection of the Hungarian National Museum. The Báthori Castle in Nyírbátor features a permanent exhibition and a waxwork display depicting members of the Báthori family in a period setting. Tiszadob offers another castle story: Andrássy Castle was built there between 1880 and 1885 in the French Gothic style by former Prime Minister Gyula Andrássy, to designs by Ignác Alpár.

The northern Hungarian section of the Medieval Churches Route is also a regional cultural highlight. It connects 37 churches in the medieval ecclesiastical landscape of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg. This extends the cultural experience beyond individual castles to include the region’s sacred architecture.

Marshes, Protected Areas, and Waters

The Bátorliget Primeval Swamp is an approximately 53-hectare strictly protected area. It preserves particularly complete examples of various stages in the vegetation and landscape history of the Alföld Plain. The Cégénydányád Park Nature Reserve currently covers 14.28 hectares. Near Csaroda are Nyíres-tó and Báb tava, distinctive peat bogs whose origins date back to the Ice Age.

Near Tiszadob, the nature reserve covers 1,000 hectares of oxbow lakes, floodplain forests, and grassland. A large heron colony of 80 to 90 pairs nests in Tölgyes Forest. The 77-hectare Vajai Reservoir near Vaja offers a different connection to water: it is fed by the Vajai Main Ditch and is suitable for fishing and irrigation. Together, these examples illustrate the variety of landscapes in the region without replacing Levelek’s focus on the castle and lakeside trail.
