Miklósi brings together several historical periods: medieval settlement sites, German immigration in the 18th century, a church dating from 1894, and a centrally located leisure park. History, commemorative culture, and the local recreational facility sit alongside archaeological and natural features. If you’re looking for a holiday apartment in Miklósi, these themes can help you decide which part of the village will be of particular interest during your stay.

Historical periods in Miklósi

Miklósi was first mentioned in written records between 1332 and 1337. In 1436, the two settlements of Alsó-Miklósi and Felső-Miklósi were recorded in the Miklósi area. These are two settlements, not two names for the same place. Perneszipuszta, in the municipality of Miklósi, was a market town in the Middle Ages and also a church settlement. The predecessor of present-day Miklósi was located in Ráctemető-dűlő and was destroyed during the Ottoman occupation. In the first half of the 18th century, German settlers from Mainz and the Palatinate came to Miklósi. Thus, medieval settlement sites and later immigration from two named regions stand side by side as distinct chapters.

Church, memorial, and patronal feast

The Keresztelő-Szent-János Church is a later landmark: Cardinal Hornig had it built in 1894. The church visible today stands on a hill. A war memorial bearing the names of those killed in the First and Second World Wars stands in front of the church. The church’s patronal feast is held on June 24; check the latest celebration details before your trip.

Nagy-Tímea Leisure Park

Nagy-Tímea Leisure Park is located in the village center. It is named after Nagy Tímea, an Olympic champion and fencer, and was built using prize money. The park includes an ornamental pond and a football pitch; benches and street lamps are located around the pond. If any of these amenities are important for your visit, check their current condition on site.

Archaeological and natural features

The area’s history also reaches back to earlier periods: there are extensive Bronze Age settlement sites around Miklósi; an above-ground trace of a Roman-era settlement at Házi-föld; and a medieval cemetery around a church at Belső-Pernec. Another natural feature is the Zics-Miklósi watercourse, home to the European crayfish (Astacus astacus). Its presence may change over time, so a sighting cannot be guaranteed. In the wider travel destination of Southern Lake Balaton, Zselici Tájvédelmi Körzet received the title “International Dark Sky Park” in 2009 because of its low light pollution; Zselici Csillagpark was established in the heart of the protected area.
