The Böre-vár hillfort, the Bujó-lik Tunnel and the history of the Képes-fa offer different historical points of reference in Ságvár. The surrounding hilly landscape also provides panoramic views of Lake Balaton and the area. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you are most interested in the landscape, architectural history or local traditions.

Hilly Landscape and Views

The Mezőföld and Somogyi-halomvidék landscapes meet in Ságvár. The first hills of the Somogyi-halomvidék encircle the village in a semicircle. Their slopes are home to vineyards, orchards, wine cellars and weekend houses. The hills offer panoramic views of Lake Balaton and its northern shore, Ságvár and the surrounding landscape. Thus, descriptions of the village encompass both views towards the lake and connections to the village itself and its surroundings.

Hillfort and Architectural History

Böre-vár is a hillfort within the territory of Ságvár. Measuring 150 by 57 metres, it lies five kilometres southwest of Ságvár on the southern side of the Jaba Valley. Its location can be distinguished from the sights in the village while still keeping its connection to the municipality in view.

Two other historical points of interest are close together in the village: the present-day Reformed Church and Tricciana Park stand side by side. The church was built between 1811 and 1814 under the direction of Csicsvai Vasas András. The Reformed congregation financed construction with money from the share of the harvest. The park next to the church commemorates the Roman fortification; archaeological research and excavations bring this historical period to life. The history to be discovered in Ságvár thus ranges from the Roman fortification to the church built in the early 19th century.

Bujó-lik and the Képes-fa

Bujó-lik, also known as Lyukas-domb, is a tunnel on Lándor-hegy. As of 2013, it was 21.6 metres long, about two metres wide and an average of 1.75 metres high. Its length and height gradually decrease over time, so these measurements refer specifically to 2013. The tunnel can be reached from the village centre after about 1.5 kilometres along the yellow trail. Check the trail markings locally before setting out.

A different story is associated with the Képes-fa, an oak by the road to Jaba puszta that is believed to be more than 300 years old. Historically, the tree served as a resting place for pilgrims walking to the shrine in Andocs. The name Képes-fa comes from an image of Saint Vendel that pilgrims from Székesfehérvár placed on the tree in 1930. The tunnel and the oak therefore offer different points of connection: one illustrates how the measurements of a natural landmark gradually change, while the other is tied to a specific year in local history.

Excursions and Regional Context

The Ságvárért Egyesület developed the Löszölő-Tökölő challenge hikes to make use of the natural surroundings. The route leads to special and notable places in Ságvár and the surrounding area. The Megalöszölő/Löszölő/Tökölő challenge hike took place every July from 2007 onwards; exact dates may change. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the dates. The shady forests around Ságvár are also suitable for excursions; local rules may apply to hunting.

Regional Context: Lake Balaton - South

In the wider destination of Lake Balaton - South, the Zselici Tájvédelmi Körzet was awarded International Dark Sky Park status in 2009 because of its low light pollution. The Zselici Csillagpark was built in the heart of the protected area. This regional context adds a distinct connection to the landscape of the wider destination to the local history of Ságvár.
