The natural attractions around Kaszó range from the moorland and rare plants at Baláta-tó to forest nature trails and native large game species. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between the different highlights: moorland flora takes center stage at Baláta-tó, the nature trails introduce different aspects of the forest, and native large game species are presented as part of a guided activity at Kaszói Vadaspark.

Baláta-tó: moorland flora in a protected setting

The Baláta-tó Nature Reserve, covering almost 220 hectares, is located near Kaszó. It has been protected since 1942 and is the oldest nature reserve in Somogy County. Within the wider Balaton - South destination, Baláta lies between Kaszó and Szenta and is considered one of Somogy’s most treasured natural assets. Botanical highlights at Baláta-tó include the rare carnivorous Aldrovanda vesiculosa, which grows in floating mats. Also found there are heart-leaved bladderwort, bog strawberry, peat mosses, marsh gentian, and the Carpathian crocus.

Compare moorland and forest trails

The approximately 600-meter-long Dr. Marián Miklós sétány runs along a boardwalk above the moor meadow. It offers views of the moorland without disturbing the natural features on display. The just under 1.5-kilometer-long Öregerdő Tanösvény, renovated in 2025, has a different focus. Eight stations and 15 information boards introduce visitors to the components, interactions, and diversity of the forest community, the forest’s layers, and common plants and animals in the forest area. To compare the trails, consider both length and subject: about 600 meters alongside the moor meadow versus just under 1.5 kilometers of forest themes.

Forest and wildlife as further highlights

The Lombkorona Tanösvény offers another perspective on the forest. It runs at the level of the lower canopy, 9.5 meters above the ground, and is about 124 meters long. The trail introduces typical forest plants and animals. The two measurements describe different things: 9.5 meters is the height of the trail, while about 124 meters is its length. At Kaszói Vadaspark, a guided activity introduces visitors to native large game species across 2.5 hectares.

Railway and regional context

The Kaszói Állami Erdei Vasút route is arranged as a round trip between Kaszó and the Baláta stop. If you plan to take the railway, check the timetable in advance. Allow one hour to explore the Dr. Marián Miklós sétány independently; this time estimate applies to the trail, not the train journey.

Within the wider Balaton - South destination, Zselici Tájvédelmi Körzet received the International Dark Sky Park designation in 2009 because of its low light pollution. Zselici Csillagpark was established in the heart of the protected area. The dark sky park is a separate theme within the wider Balaton - South destination.
