Fishing and wildlife watching at Kifoglak Horgásztó
Kifoglak Horgásztó in Csurgónagymarton covers an area of 4.6 hectares and has two ponds, each measuring 0.5 hectares. Feeder, bottom and float fishing are possible there; carp fishing with boilies is offered at a second pond. The area figures refer to different scales: the site and the individual ponds. If you want to focus your visit on fishing, you can choose from the methods listed; the boilie option is associated with the second pond. It is worth checking the operator’s latest information and rules when planning your visit.
The second pond is surrounded by woodland. Visitors can watch deer, roe deer and wild ducks there. So, in addition to the fishing methods, wildlife watching is another option. When deciding what to do, you can distinguish between the two main attractions: the various types of fishing at Kifoglak Horgásztó and the animals you can watch at the wooded second pond.
Hilly Landscape and Arboretum
Csurgónagymarton is part of the Zalaapáti-hát, a hilly landscape that extends from north to south and has been shaped by erosion and denudation. The local forest types include hornbeam–sessile oak forests, beech forests and mixed oak forests. This description therefore covers both the landscape’s shape and its varied forests. For nature enthusiasts, this offers a different perspective from the ponds at Kifoglak Horgásztó: the focus here is on the wider hilly landscape and its forest types.
The Ágneslaki Arboretum is another regional natural attraction. Its collection includes 52 conifer species and 26 deciduous tree species, and individual visits are possible. You can visit the arboretum on weekdays from 8:00 to 16:00 and at weekends from 9:00 to 16:00. The closing time is the same on both, while visiting hours start an hour later at weekends. This makes it easy to plan your visit around a weekday or weekend schedule. The collection offers a different focus from the forests of the Zalaapáti-hát.
In the wider Lake Balaton – South destination area, the Zselici Tájvédelmi Körzet was awarded the title of International Dark Sky Park in 2009 because of its low light pollution. The Zselici Csillagpark was established in the heart of the protected area. This is a distinct regional natural attraction, separate from the ponds in Csurgónagymarton and the town’s location within the Zalaapáti-hát. It adds another perspective on the wider destination without attributing the protected area’s features to Csurgónagymarton itself.
Route and Bodies of Water
The Mária Út route passes through Petőfi utca in Csurgónagymarton and ends at a small lake fed by the Máriás stream. This identifies both a street along the route and a specific type of body of water at the endpoint. The lake at the end of the route is distinct from the two ponds at Kifoglak Horgásztó: the ponds belong to the fishing site, while the small lake is the destination of the route described here. When considering the area’s water features, it helps to distinguish between the fishing ponds and the route’s endpoint.
Church and Festival Tradition
The Reformed church in Csurgónagymarton was built between 1839 and 1841 and is a protected historic monument. Its construction dates and protected status provide two specific historical points of reference.
The Kukorikú-Kukoris Festival is part of the local festival tradition; the municipality of Csurgónagymarton and Kifoglak Horgásztó held it annually from 2018 to 2023. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the exact date in advance.
