Castle Replica on Nagy-Kevély

The replica of Eger Castle is located on the southwestern slope of Nagy-Kevély, within the municipality of Pilisborosjenő, near Teve-szikla and the Országos Kéktúra. It was built in the 1960s for the filming of Egri csillagok. Its origins as a film set and its position on the hillside give the castle replica two distinct points of reference: film history and the landscape. This places a specific historical subject alongside the paths and natural landmarks in the surrounding area.

Nature Trail and Calvary

The Kevélyhegyi Nature Trail was completed in spring 2008 and is about 10 km long. It leads to cultural and natural highlights in Pilisborosjenő and its surroundings. Information boards at the stops provide detailed descriptions of the distinctive features and values of each location. This means the trail can be understood not only by its approximate length, but also by its themes. If you value interpretive stops when planning an outing, this offers a different way to find your bearings than local routes described by direction and trail markings.

One specific example of the trail’s cultural heritage focus is the Calvary. It is a stop on the nature trail on 278-metre-high Vendel-hegy, within the municipality of Pilisborosjenő. The Calvary’s stations and crosses were made from Hárshegy sandstone and funded by donations from village residents. The material and funding offer different insights into the site: the sandstone indicates how it was built, while the donations reflect support from the village residents. At the same time, its role as a nature trail stop places the Calvary on a route to cultural and natural highlights.

Marked Routes and Paths in the Area

If you are planning a route towards Kevély-nyereg, its starting point is in the village centre: the yellow-marked trail begins on Templom utca. A blue-marked route for cyclists also starts in the centre, on the former Roman road. The descriptions therefore differ both in the direction given and in the stated intended use. Check the current trail markings before setting out so you can plan around the route that suits you.

Nearby, a yellow-marked trail from Pilisborosjenő passes below Gyopáros-barlang. A blue route above Teve-sziklák also runs below the cave. Gyopáros-barlang is freely accessible; check the route details before setting out. To distinguish between the two routes, note that the blue route also runs above Teve-sziklák. This helps you identify the described routes by their position relative to the cave and Teve-sziklák.

Geological Formations at Teve-szikla

Near Teve-szikla, the rock face of a quarry displays impressive geological formations; the upper edge offers a view. This adds a geological perspective on the surroundings to the cultural heritage themes. While the Kevélyhegyi Nature Trail’s information boards explain the distinctive features and values of each stop, the quarry wall foregrounds the formations and the view from its upper edge.
