Nagykáta combines historical landmarks in the town with recurring cultural events. Egreskáta, east of the town, offers a different perspective: wetlands, grasslands and salt lakes shape the landscape there. Three questions can help with planning your trip: Are you mainly interested in architectural history, would you like to plan your stay around an event, or should the surrounding wetlands be the deciding factor? The answers point to different priorities and times of year.

Architectural history and a historic site

The Szent György Church was built in the 16th century and rebuilt around 1745. The Keglevich Chapel was also built in the 18th century. These represent two different historical timelines: an older church rebuilt around 1745, and a chapel whose construction dates to the 18th century. If you are interested in historic religious buildings, these dates can help you distinguish between the original construction period and a later rebuilding.

Keglevich Castle adds a specific connection from 1849 to this architectural history. On April 4, it served as Görgey's headquarters; Kossuth visited the wounded from the Battle of Tápióbicske, which was fought partly within the town limits. Today, the castle houses the mayor's office. This site therefore brings together an event in the town's history and a present-day municipal function.

Commemorative day and annual festivals

April 4 is Nagykáta's official Town Day. At the annual commemorative ceremony, Hungarian and foreign military re-enactment groups remember the skirmish of 1849. First, the fallen are remembered and a wreath is laid on the banks of the Tápió at the former battlefield; afterward, the groups commemorate the skirmish. The precise program may vary. Those interested in the town's history will find a regular annual event with a clear historical connection.

The international Kátai Tánctalálkozó is also held every year and has a tradition spanning decades. TápióFeszt has a different focus: this festival celebrating gastronomy and culture is held every September in Nagykáta. Together, the two festivals offer different cultural occasions, while Town Day is dedicated to commemorating the skirmish of 1849. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the date of that year's edition.

Wetlands in the surrounding area

Egreskáta lies east of Nagykáta, along the Hajta stream. Covering 350 hectares, the area includes reed marshes, salty and sandy grasslands, and salt lakes. Between the wetlands there is also a remnant of a steppe oak forest covering a few hectares. The bodies of water include Bata-tó, Monori-tó and Sós-tavak. This combination gives the landscape a different character from Nagykáta's historic buildings and town events: here, water, open grasslands and a small remnant of woodland define the scenery. Conditions in the wetlands vary by season, so bear the time of year in mind if you include the area in your plans.
