The Bugyi Nagyközség Tájháza brings together themes of everyday life and work; the Szégyenkő recalls historic church proceedings. The natural landscape ranges from the salt steppe on Ürbő’s southwestern edge, known for its birdlife, to a dwarf iris on the Puszta side facing Bugyi. Local culture, religious history, and landscape thus offer distinct focal points for your trip.

Everyday Culture at the Tájház

The Bugyi Nagyközség Tájháza was built following a successful funding application and handed over in 2013. It is located a few hundred metres from the town centre. The exhibitions cover local customs, ways of life, agriculture, and crafts; guests can try out some of the activities on display. The house thus combines insights into local culture with a practical element. If you are interested in crafts or agriculture, this combination offers a tangible way to engage with topics that might otherwise remain abstract.

Visitors can take part in some of the activities: the Tájház covers a broader range of topics than those available to try out. This distinction is important if hands-on activities are a factor in choosing your visit.

Lectures are regularly held in the exhibition room, and summer craft camps offer activities for children. The usable búbos kemence has been used several times to bake bread and kenyérlángos at craft camps or when welcoming groups. A baker kneaded the dough and prepared it with sourdough. Lectures and summer activities vary depending on the occasion and season. If you want to make a lecture or children’s activity the main reason for your trip, ask in advance about current dates and visiting arrangements.

Church History at the Szégyenkő

The Szégyenkő stands in the garden of Bugyi’s Reformed Church. It is associated with numerous “eklézsiakövetési” proceedings: those who had broken church laws repented of their actions before the pulpit and in front of the stone set up in the church garden. This was a historical practice; the stone therefore points to a part of church history, not to present-day penance procedures. Compared with the Tájház, which explores customs, ways of life, and work, the focus here is on the religious rules of the time and how they were enforced.

Salt Steppe and Dwarf Iris

The southwestern edge of Ürbő is part of the salt steppe of Kiskunság National Park, known for its birdlife. On the side of the Puszta facing Bugyi lies a 9.4-hectare nature reserve. The dwarf iris, also known as the small iris, blooms there as a plant of the former marsh meadow. The salt steppe represents the wider landscape; the nature reserve marks the specific location of the dwarf iris. This lets you distinguish between birdlife and landscape on the one hand, and an individual plant species and its former habitat on the other.
