Explore Gödöllő through several cultural perspectives: the permanent exhibition at Gödöllő Royal Palace, historic buildings in its park and the town museum. When planning your stay, it helps to choose your focus first: should the history of the palace take centre stage, or would you also like to include the town museum, a recommended park walk and the Gödöllő Arboretum?

Palace History and Park Buildings

The permanent exhibition at Gödöllő Royal Palace traces the history of the palace through 31 rooms. It spans the period from the Grassalkovich family, who commissioned its construction, through its time as a royal summer residence, to the present day. You can therefore treat the exhibition as a distinct theme when planning your trip: its guiding thread connects the family who commissioned the building with its later royal use and its development up to the present. If you are chiefly interested in the history of the palace, it provides a clear starting point for choosing additional places to visit.

In the palace park, the Királydombi Pavilion offers a different perspective: it displays portraits of the leaders from the time of the Hungarian Conquest and of Hungarian kings. This selection connects the history of the site with figures from different periods of Hungary’s past. In one of the rooms in the south wing of the palace, Antal Grassalkovich II (1734–1794) had a theatre hall installed during renovations from 1782 to 1785. This links a specific room to a named patron and a clearly dated period of renovation. In the upper park, the two-winged Palm House was built in 1870, during the reign of Queen Elisabeth. These three details offer different points of interest: portraits in the pavilion, theatre history in the palace and a park building with two wings. They help you explore the historic complex from more than one perspective.

Town Museum and Walk

The Gödöllő Town Museum is in the town centre, in a former aristocratic inn built in the 1760s. Its former purpose sets the building apart from the royal residence and gives the museum location its own connection to the town. A walk in Erzsébet Park is also among the recommended activities for visitors to Gödöllő. It offers a different way to spend your time from visiting exhibitions and exploring architectural history. If you would like to combine culture with a walk, you can include Erzsébet Park as a separate stop in your plans.

Getting There and Choosing Accommodation

Near the destination, “Gödöllő-Állami telepek” station is a useful point of reference for reaching the Gödöllő Arboretum: it is on the Hatvan–Budapest-Keleti line and around 900 metres from the park entrance. The distance refers to the park entrance. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetable for your travel date.
