Nature, outdoor activities and seasonal traditions take center stage in Somoskőújfalu. The administrative area also includes parts of the Karancs-Medves Landscape Protection Area. A hiking trail marked with an “S” leads from Salgótarján in the direction of Somoskőújfalu, and the village offers horseback riding as well as a gingerbread village during Advent. When planning your trip, you can choose based on whether you prefer a hike, a horseback ride or a cultural event.

Landscape and Hiking Trail

The Karancs-Medves Landscape Protection Area also includes the administrative area of Somoskőújfalu. It provides a habitat for diverse wildlife, including rare and protected species. This connects the village’s landscape setting with a specific nature conservation focus.

The hiking trail marked with an “S” leads from the center of Salgótarján through the Ceberna Valley to the Karancs Saddle. From there, it runs eastward downhill in the direction of Somoskőújfalu. The description thus outlines a clear route between the named places without presenting it as a circular hike or a fixed day plan. If you plan to hike the route, check trail conditions locally.

Advent Traditions and Local Events

Since 2019, a gingerbread village has been set up in Somoskőújfalu each year during Advent and is open to visitors. The exhibition is located in the club room, in the window of the right wing of the Petőfi Sándor Cultural Center. As the exhibition location may change in future years, confirm where the village can be seen that year before visiting during Advent.

Another regular event is “Hazatérés napja” (“Day of Return”) on February 15. The Somoskői Váralja Egyesület and the Somosi Kultúráért Egyesület have organized the celebration since 1999. Alongside the Advent exhibition, the calendar therefore offers a second event at a different time of year that you can take into account when planning your visit.

Horseback Riding and Other Activities

You can go horseback riding at Kakuk Lovasudvar in Somoskőújfalu, where riding tours are also organized. If you would like to plan this activity, check availability before your visit. Hiking, horseback riding and seasonal exhibitions offer different experiences. You can choose according to your interests without having to combine these activities into one outing or a particular itinerary.

More Cultural and Nature Attractions in the Broader Destination of Neuburg

The broader destination of Neuburg offers other cultural and nature attractions as part of the regional overview. The old village of Hollókő is a Palóc settlement in Nógrád County and a deliberately preserved, living example of rural life before the 20th-century agricultural revolution. In Csesztve, the Madách Imre Memorial House features a permanent exhibition on the history of the Madách family, focused on “Az ember tragédiája.” The Mikszáth Kálmán Memorial Museum in Horpács is dedicated to “MIKSZÁTH” in its permanent literary history exhibition.

In Pásztó, the Pásztó Museum’s permanent and temporary exhibitions are housed in a Baroque Cistercian monastery building rebuilt in 1717–1718. The museum also features a medieval glassworks and blacksmith’s workshop as an open-air exhibition and as an industrial heritage monument unique in Hungary. These attractions have a different focus from Somoskőújfalu’s local hiking, horseback riding and Advent activities.

Geology is another regional theme: the Boszorkány-kő educational trail lies within the Karancs-Medves Landscape Protection Area, established in 1989 and currently covering 6,928.6 hectares, and illustrates basalt volcanism from 2.4 to 5.2 million years ago. The formations on display include sediment inclusions torn up from deep underground, curved lava slabs and basalt columns formed through weathering. In Salgótarján, industrial history leads to the preserved galleries of the József Inclined Shaft, dug in 1937: a mining museum opened there in 1965, becoming Europe’s second museum to open to the public in an original mine.
