A Baroque stone bridge over an old course of the Lókos Stream, memorial sites commemorating the Battle of Romhány, and two named trails give a stay in Romhány a range of different focuses. This makes it possible to choose where to stay based on a specific question: should the history of the architecture and its commemorations take centre stage, or should a route through Romhány be the deciding factor?

Stone Bridge and Statue of St John of Nepomuk

The three-arched stone bridge in Romhány was built in the Baroque style in the 18th century and crosses an old course of the Lókos Stream. A Baroque statue of St John of Nepomuk stands on the southern parapet, on a tall stone pedestal decorated with a capital. The structure thus combines a distinctive bridge design with a statue placed in a specific location.

Monuments to Local History

In the memorial park on the edge of town, to the left of the road to Szátok, stands an eight-metre-high monument to the Battle of Romhány, erected in 1932. The obelisk of the Rákóczi Monument is crowned by a Turul; relief portraits of Rákóczi and Sándor Károlyi, commander-in-chief of the Kuruc forces, appear on its sides. A plaque on the Rákóczi Monument commemorates 93 Swedish, Polish and French soldiers who fell in battle.

Turkish Hazel and a Story Passed Down

The Turkish hazel (Corylus colurna) in Romhány is about 20 metres tall; its crown is about 25 metres in diameter and its trunk has a circumference of 250 centimetres. These measurements may change over time. A historical tradition is also associated with the hazel: according to written accounts, a former soldier visited Francis II Rákóczi during his exile in Rodostó. The prince gave him a Turkish hazel sapling, which the soldier was to plant in Romhány in memory of the battle of 22 January 1710. The story is therefore presented as an account passed down through tradition.

The Lókos Valley and Trails Through Romhány

Romhány lies in the Lókos Valley and is surrounded by the mountain ranges of the Cserhát. Core areas, ecological corridors and buffer zones of the national ecological network touch the town. Romhány also borders an area that requires special consideration from the perspective of landscape protection. Consult the planning maps for current boundaries.

The trails also offer different points of reference. Section 18 of the Országos Kéktúra passes through Romhány between Nógrád and Becske. If you plan to rely on the current route for navigation, check the route information in advance. The Rákóczi Educational Trail is about 11 kilometres long, has seven stations and runs not only through Romhány but also through the areas of the municipalities of Kétbodony and Szátok. Nógrád and Becske are named as places on the Kéktúra; the length and number of stations provide a concrete basis for choosing a tour on the educational trail.

Choosing Romhány as a Destination

When looking for a hotel for a trip to Romhány, the focus of your stay can guide your decision: the bridge and monuments offer architectural and commemorative history, while the two named trails provide different points of reference for hiking. This makes it possible to choose Romhány based on whether you would rather include the town’s historical details or a route through the surrounding area in your plans.
