Palotás can be explored through two specific subjects: the Baroque church and its building history, and the Palotás Reservoir with its dimensions and species-rich surroundings. The town’s history and natural environment thus sit side by side. As you plan your trip, you can decide whether the church or the landscape is the bigger draw.

A Baroque church with a turbulent building history

Eszterházy Pál had the Baroque church in Palotás built in 1743. In 1806, lightning struck the building, and it subsequently had to be completely rebuilt. The two dates mark a clear sequence: construction was followed by a complete reconstruction. This turning point is particularly revealing for the town’s history. The building history encompasses not only its Baroque origins but also the event that made reconstruction necessary.

Reservoir, habitats and ice fishing

The Palotás Reservoir lies between the municipalities of Palotás and Kisbágyon. It is 2.5 kilometres long, 30 metres wide on average and an average of 4 to 5 metres deep. These measurements convey the proportions of the body of water; water conditions can vary.

The immediate surroundings are also part of the picture: the reservoir and its environs are among the most species-rich areas of Cserhátalja. Several habitat types can be found in a small area, many of which have largely disappeared elsewhere in the landscape. This travel theme is therefore about more than the body of water itself; it also concerns the diversity of habitats in its surroundings.

Ice fishing is also permitted at Palotási-tó. If you are considering this option, check the current rules in advance and whether the ice conditions are suitable. The permission and the actual conditions are two factors to consider when making your decision.

More places to explore in the wider destination of Neuburg

In the wider destination of Neuburg, the old village of Hollókő offers a distinct cultural perspective. It is a Palóc settlement in Nógrád County in northern Hungary and a deliberately preserved, living example of rural life before the 20th-century Agrarian Revolution. Rural life is thus at the heart of Hollókő, while in Palotás the subjects described here are the church and the reservoir.

Another focus on history is the Pásztó Museum. Its permanent and temporary exhibitions are housed in a Baroque Cistercian monastery building that was rebuilt in 1717–1718. The museum also presents a medieval glassworks and blacksmith’s workshop as an open-air exhibition—an industrial heritage monument unique in Hungary. This connects the exhibition themes with a specific historic building and the region’s artisanal past.

For those interested in geology, the Geocsodák House in Salgótarján offers interactive exhibitions and lectures. The offerings also include more than 30 accessible walking trails with information boards, which you can explore independently or with a hiking guide. The geological themes there are therefore quite different from Palotás’ building history and the habitats around the reservoir.
