Coal mining is the subject of the Bányászati és Ipari Skanzen on the site of the former XV-ös mine; its historic complex included an underground mine area open to visitors, furnished offices and outdoor machinery. The skanzen illustrates coal mining on the site of the former XV-ös mine as a complete mining complex. Its scope therefore ranges from workspaces and mine areas to the facilities that shaped mining.
The exhibitions also include a crafts house, a school museum, the history of the power plant and other aspects of local mining history. These add different insights into industrial heritage to the presentation of coal mining. The skanzen also offers educational programs: these include period-style lessons in classrooms at the school museum from the 1920s and 1960s, as well as the “Mesterségek dicsérete” program. These programs may be scheduled seasonally; check which ones are currently running before your visit.
Cave archaeology and historical memory
Szelim Cave is a specially protected cave and an important archaeological site. Its chamber is 45 meters long and 18 meters high; three entrances are at ground level. These measurements give a sense of its scale, while its archaeological significance also makes the cave an interesting archaeological site.
The Turul Monument commemorates the victory of Árpád’s Hungarian conquerors over the Moravian prince Svatopluk at Bánhida in 907. Its wingspan is 14 meters, and it holds a 14-meter-long Árpád sword in its talons. Here, two equal measurements refer to different parts of the monument: the wingspan and the length of the sword.
Nature themes along the nature trail
The 889-meter-long Ranzinger Vince Nature Trail in Tatabánya leads to a 30-meter-high lookout tower converted from a headframe. Ten information boards introduce the characteristic flora and fauna of the Gerecse. The trail thus combines a specified distance with nature themes and a distinctive destination.
The hike takes an average of 20 minutes one way. When planning your time, note that this estimate is for one direction; your actual pace and the weather may affect the duration. The boards give the route a focus: they introduce the flora and fauna of the Gerecse, rather than focusing solely on the lookout tower.
A wide range of museums
The collections of the Tatabányai Múzeum include natural science, archaeological, historical, ethnographic, fine art, industrial history and technology history objects. The museum is a cultural center with exhibitions, specialist and public programs, and events for visitors. Compared with the skanzen’s focus on coal mining, the museum covers a broader range of fields of knowledge and culture.
Choose a stay that suits you
The places and themes mentioned offer different starting points for planning, without prescribing a set itinerary. If educational programs at the museum are important to you, take their possible seasonal scheduling into account when planning your visit.
