Discover Istenmezeje through two very different rock formations and its church art: a cave-like rock chapel at a sandstone outcrop and fossilized, vine-like shapes arranged in regular rows. There is also a Roman Catholic church on a high hill near the center of the village. These features give your trip planning a clear focus, between built heritage and geological curiosities.

A hilltop church and stone fruit baskets

Istenmezeje’s Roman Catholic church stands on a high hill near the center of the village and is surrounded by a cemetery. Its Neoclassical style defines the building’s appearance. At the entrance, you can see stone carvings of fruit baskets by sculptor Hösz János, dating from the 1770s. The church thus combines a clearly identifiable style with a specific example of stone sculpture.

The church and the rock chapel offer different focal points: the Neoclassical architecture takes center stage in one, while the other brings together a rock formation and a religious site. Those choosing Istenmezeje for its distinctive architectural and artistic features will therefore find more than a single attraction, without needing to view both sights in the same way.

Rock chapel and sandstone formations

At the foot of the sandstone outcrop in Istenmezeje stands the rock chapel dedicated to Saint László; above it is a statue of Christ. The rock chapel looks like a cave, and its construction date is unknown. These details set it apart from the hilltop church: the chapel’s location beside the rock and cave-like appearance shape the impression it makes, while the church is described by its Neoclassical style.

Another geological curiosity is Noé vineyard, a sandstone rock formation in Istenmezeje. Fossilized, vine-like shapes lie there in regular rows. The cement-like mineral bodies are called “kőbucik.” Their arrangement in rows and their distinctive name make them a different subject to explore from the rock chapel: one is a consecrated site with a statue above it, while the other is a named rock formation with characteristic shapes.

The wider picture: Heves County

The broader destination of Heves County offers additional, distinct natural and cultural themes. The Hevesi Füves Puszták Protected Landscape Area lies in the southern part of Heves County. Covering 16,114 hectares, it was designated in 1993 and reached its current extent following expansions in 2005 and 2008. This is a different landscape focus from the sandstone formations and church art that characterize Istenmezeje.

Walking trails also offer distinct points of interest across Heves County: the 6.5-kilometer Ilona Valley Nature Trail runs past the geological features of the Eastern Mátra Mountains and traces of former ore mining. The Pély-Ludas Nature Trail introduces visitors to the grassland habitats of the Heves Plain, including alkaline grasslands, marshes, bodies of water, scrub, semi-natural woodlands and forests, as well as the local wildlife and European roller population. These themes offer a different focus from Istenmezeje’s geological formations.

The wider destination’s cultural character also includes Szépasszony Valley, which contains Eger’s largest continuous area of wine cellars. Wine culture and its associated gastronomy are important tourist attractions there. Heves weaving, in turn, is a textile heritage of Heves County associated with Heves, Mátraderecske and Bodony. In the county program for 2021, the Mátra-Bükk tourism area was designated a priority tourism area.

Choose the right focus

To help you decide on your trip, distinguish between the local profile and the wider regional picture. Istenmezeje’s main attractions are its Neoclassical church, László Rock Chapel and the “kőbucik” at Noé vineyard. Heves County also offers protected landscapes, walking trails, wine and gastronomy, and textile heritage.
