In Bélapátfalva, the Cistercian Abbey at the foot of Bél-kő and the mountain landscape offer two distinct ways to spend your time: exploring cultural history and hiking. The Bél-kő educational trail starts at the abbey and leads to a viewpoint. This makes it easy to consider both themes when planning your trip.

The Cistercian Abbey: Architectural History and Art

The Bélapátfalvai Ciszterci Apátság was founded in 1232 by Bishop Kilit II of Eger at the foot of Bél-kő. Its late Romanesque features include thick walls, a basilica layout and a splayed portal. Other architectural elements reflect different styles: the abbey has Gothic rose windows and a Baroque organ gallery.

The furnishings also offer their own historical points of interest. The south aisle houses the Saint Emeric Altar, a work created in 1748 by József Hartmann, a sculptor from Košice, and an outstanding example of Hungarian Rococo art. The church organ was built in 1775 by Ferenc Szabó, an organ builder from Eger, and is still in working order. The altar and organ therefore date from the 18th century, while the abbey’s architectural history reaches back to its founding in the 13th century. Culture enthusiasts will find several specific periods and art forms represented in one place.

The Bél-kő Educational Trail and Other Hiking Routes

The Bél-kő educational trail starts at the Cistercian Abbey and leads to a viewpoint at an altitude of 816 metres. The route is five kilometres long, has seven stations and takes about two to three hours. These details can help with time planning, although the walking time should be understood as an approximate guide. The trail covers the cultural history of the area, the mountain’s geological structure, plant communities, and the protected flora and fauna of the rocky grasslands.

Bél-kő’s stepped, rocky appearance was shaped by past mining. The mountain’s landscape and human use are among the features that set it apart. The Országos Kéktúra long-distance trail also passes through Bélapátfalva. The trail on Bél-kő and the long-distance route offer different options for hikers; the educational trail’s length and approximate duration are provided.

Gyári-tó, Craftsmanship and Remembrance

Gyári-tó and its surroundings are a popular destination for outings and recreation among locals and visitors. Fishing at the lake began in 1979. If you are planning a trip specifically for fishing, check the current options in advance. This distinguishes the lake’s historical use from planning a fishing trip today.

Another part of the area’s cultural history is the hardstoneware from Bélapátfalva. Its distinctive folk-style decoration developed from 1866 under the direction of Sándor Dubravszky and his family. During this period, underglaze painting replaced overglaze painting; the former factory closed in 1927. The Hősök könyve commemorates the soldiers from Bélapátfalva who fell in the First and Second World Wars. It was presented and consecrated in January 2017 and is on display at the Gesztenyés Kiállítóház. If you plan to visit this place of remembrance, check the visiting arrangements in advance.

Chapels and Memorial Sites Nearby

The Gilitka Chapel, also known as the Chapel of Saint Anne, is nearby. This listed Roman Catholic chapel is located in the valley of the Gilitka stream, on the section of the Országos Kéktúra between Bélapátfalva and Szarvaskő. It was built in 1750 by Miklós Androvics, rector of the seminary in Eger.

The Bábafa is also nearby. An association organizes a hike there every spring during Születés Hete and again in autumn; check the dates locally for your travel year. A small memorial in the form of a shelter was established in 2010 at the edge of the clearing next to the Bábafa. Information boards bearing a commemorative message are displayed on its wall. The recurring hikes and the memorial offer two different reasons to consider this area when planning your trip.
