Földes combines a wetland nature trail on the edge of town with thermal waters, recreational fishing and collections of local history. This lets you choose your destination based on specific interests: nature and birdwatching, water activities, or history and crafts. The Bihari-sík Tanösvény was created by the Hortobágy National Park Directorate and can be reached on foot from Földes.
Wetlands and birdwatching at Bihari-sík
The Bihari-sík Tanösvény includes a wetland system made up of several small lakes, a shallowly flooded area of reeds and cattails, and a continuous floodplain. Two observation towers offer views across this habitat and a chance to watch its diverse birdlife with binoculars. The trail also leads to a nesting site of the strictly protected red-footed falcon.
The details offer a specific nature-focused experience without requiring a stated trail length or walking time: you can reach the trail on foot from Földes and view the wetlands from the observation towers. Those with a particular interest in birds can focus on watching them with binoculars; the towers also provide a view of the habitat as a whole.
Recreational fishing and thermal baths
Földesi Horgásztó offers opportunities for recreational fishing. From Földes, the lake can be reached via road 4805 in the direction of Hajdúszovát. This offers a different kind of nature experience alongside the trail: the lake is associated with recreational fishing, while the Bihari-sík Tanösvény focuses on wetlands and birdwatching.
Földesi Termálfürdő has a 29-metre-long swimming pool with a tensioned water surface and two warm-water pools. At the point of discharge, the thermal water has a temperature of 67 °C and is rich in salt, alkaline chlorides, iodine and bromine. For the 2026 season, Földesi Termálfürdő’s outdoor bathing area will be closed for renovation.
Blacksmithing and local collections
Kállay Utcai Kovácsmúzeum displays a complete blacksmith’s workshop with nearly 500 tools. A map on an exterior wall commemorates the work of Földes’s master blacksmiths and the locations of their former workshops. The collection of tools and the map offer two distinct perspectives: the equipment of a workshop and the history of blacksmithing in the town.
Karácsony Sándor Állandó Emlékkiállítás is arranged around nine display cases. Its materials can be studied on site. Reprints and duplicate copies are available to anyone interested, including researchers and students working on theses. Pécsi Sándor Helytörténeti Gyűjteménye displays more than 4,000 objects. Together with the Reformed church building, which looks back on several centuries of history, the local history theme spans individual collections and a historic building.
Events and food culture
Földesi Madársuli is the main annual programme of the Bihar Közalapítvány event held in Földes on the first weekend of October. Check the specific event date before travelling. Szélrózsa Néptáncegyüttes performs at events at municipal, county, national and international levels, giving the ensemble a presence beyond the local event scene.
Borzos kifli is part of the local food culture: it was served on holidays, when welcoming guests and at harvest celebrations. These traditional occasions offer insight into how the pastry was used, without implying that there is a current place where it can be sampled.
Hajdú-Bihar on a broader landscape scale
Within the broader destination of Hajdú-Bihar, the Hortobágyi Nemzeti Park – the Puszta World Heritage Site covers nearly 75,000 ha of the Great Hungarian Plain in eastern Hungary. The cultural landscape preserves visible evidence of more than 2,000 years of traditional pastoral grazing. This regional context complements Földes’s local themes with a distinct perspective on the landscape and its long grazing tradition.
