Sáregres offers two distinct points of interest when planning a trip: the village’s architectural and artistic heritage, and the Rétszilasi Lakes Protected Area, which also extends across the municipality. There is also an annual festival and named road and rail connections. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide whether local history, nature or a particular travel date should shape your stay.

Lakes, Reeds and Bird Migration

The protected Rétszilasi Lakes area includes a system of fishponds, areas edged with reeds and cattails, and adjacent saline pastures. The nature reserve is important for the breeding and migration of waterbirds. This natural setting brings together specific landscape features and a clear connection to birdlife: ponds, vegetated shorelines and pastureland are all part of it, as is the area’s importance for waterbirds.

Churches and Village Scenery

The Reformed Church in Sáregres was built in 1817. It has a communion table with Empire-style inlay dating from 1842. There are 25 years between the church’s construction and the date of this furnishing; the two dates provide different chronological reference points in the building’s history. The Chapel of King Saint Louis is also in Sáregres and was built in 1883.

The architectural heritage is not limited to churches. Rows of houses with brick gables line Sáregres, including on Kossuth Street. Residential buildings are therefore also part of the village scenery, alongside its sacred buildings. If you are especially interested in historic architecture when you travel, you can see the village from two different perspectives here: its individual church buildings and a row of houses.

Art History and Fishing

A communion service celebrated in Sáregres inspired Csók István to paint “Do This in Remembrance of Me!” (Ezt cselekedjétek az én emlékezetemre!), dated 1890. This connection to art begins with a local event and leads to a painting, without implying that the communion service took place in a particular church building.

Another historical connection leads to the Malom Canal: a mill built perpendicular to the canal was constructed around 1820. The painter Csók István was born in this mill in 1865. In themed exhibitions on traditional fishing, the Aranyponty Fisheries Museum displays traditional fishing nets, handling and catching equipment, and fish containers.

Festival Date and Getting There

The St. Ladislaus Day church consecration festival is held in Sáregres every year on the last Sunday in August. If you want to plan your stay around this recurring date, check the specific details for that year’s festival before settling on your travel dates.

Sáregres is accessible via Road 61 and has a railway halt. If you plan to arrive by train, check the timetable for your travel date.

More Landscape Highlights in the Wider Fejér Destination

In the wider Fejér destination, several hiking trails lead from Pákozd to the Pákozdi Ingókövek rock formations; these trails can also be cycled. A geological educational trail, created in 1994, links the rock formations. At Lake Velence, reed beds provide a habitat for thousands of waterbirds. These landscape highlights are part of the wider Fejér destination.
