Castle history and a gorge landscape provide two distinct highlights in Fehérvárcsurgó. At Károlyi Castle, the focus is on architecture, family history, and guided tours; in the Gaja Gorge, steep walls, viewpoints, and named natural sites shape the landscape. There are also churches with different historical associations. When planning your visit, both the themes and the specific visiting conditions are therefore relevant.

Castle, Exhibition, and Events

Fehérvárcsurgó Castle was built to designs by the architect Heinrich Koch. The Károlyi family exhibition covers the family’s history in the 19th and 20th centuries, using archive photographs and film footage from those periods. A virtual botanical tour introduces the park’s old trees. In 2023, the Fehérvárcsurgó Arboretum and Károlyi Castle Park became members of the Council of Europe’s European Route of Historic Gardens.

As of August 2026, daily guided tours are planned for visits to the castle; visits are possible only with a guide. Advance booking is required because places are limited. Tours are available in English, French, German, and Italian. Check the latest information before your visit, as visiting information may change.

The “Fel a titkos lépcsőn!” program is a separate guided tour of the library. It takes place monthly on a Saturday announced in advance, and advance booking is required because places are limited. As dates may change, check the latest announcement when planning your visit.

The Károlyi József Alapítvány regularly organizes international conferences, exhibitions, and concerts. Its events program lists the 16th and 17th editions of the European String Quartet Festival “Quartettissimo.” Dates and performers may vary from one edition to another; if you are planning to attend a particular event, check the relevant announcements. The Kulturális Találkozó Központ in Fehérvárcsurgó is open to visitors.

Churches with Different Historical Associations

The Reformed Church of Fehérvárcsurgó was built in 1789. Its onion-shaped tower is considered a characteristic feature of late Baroque church architecture in Transdanubia; the interior furnishings also date from the late 18th century. The Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria has an older historical connection: it has medieval origins, and Catholic use resumed in 1748.

Gaja Gorge, Views, and Trails

The Gaja Gorge is four kilometers long and characterized by steep walls. The Vaskereszt stands at one of the gorge’s most striking viewpoints and commemorates a count from the Károlyi family. From the central complex of the Gaja-völgyi Tájcentrum, a developed but steep path leads to this monument.

The Tájcentrum also has designated easy walking trails, woodland picnic areas, and fire pits. The distinction matters when choosing a route: the easy walking trails and the steep path to the Vaskereszt are not the same route. The picnic areas and fire pits are also listed as facilities at the center.

Other natural sites each have their own appeal. The Károlyi Lookout Tower offers panoramic views of the forests of the eastern Bakony, the Gaja Gorge, and the reservoir. The Alba-Regia Spring is a developed spring and rest area with an amphitheater-like layout. The Sobri-Jóska Cave is in the Gaja Gorge and is approximately 22 meters long. The viewpoint, rest area, and cave offer different ways to explore the landscape; when planning routes and visits, it is worth checking the information for each separately.
