Dévaványa combines distinctive church architecture with a museum whose themes range from archaeological cultures to former ways of life. A producers’ market and a craft workshop add to the things to discover in town; nearby, there is also a visitor centre and a cycling route through the Dévaványai-Ecsegi puszták. When planning your trip, you can consider visits to the town and activities in the surrounding area as separate options.

Churches and Museum: Architecture and Local History

The Catholic church, built in 1908, stands on the main square. The building combines a late Baroque style with neoclassical features and is a listed monument. The Reformed church is notable for its 63-metre-high tower; it is considered one of the tallest churches in Tiszántúl. Its excellent acoustics make church concerts possible.

The history of the local collection is linked to Dr. Bereczki Imre, an ethnographer and archaeologist. For over 65 years, he assembled material for collections, archives and ethnography. On 14 April 2000, this became a museum in Dévaványa. The collections give the town a focus on both archaeology and everyday history.

Opened in 2006, the permanent archaeological exhibition features artefacts associated with the Körös, Alföld Linear Pottery, Tisza, Tiszapolgár and Pécel cultures.

Producers’ Market and Crafts

The producers’ market is held weekly on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday mornings. If you plan to visit the market, use these days as a guide and confirm the current schedule locally. The museum complements its historical themes with practical craft activities: in the workshop, children and adults can try weaving, working at a potter’s wheel, felting, leatherwork and bead stringing, among other activities. Before your visit, check whether these workshop activities will be available on your chosen date.

Nature Nearby

The Sterbetz István Túzokvédelmi Látogatóközpont is located on the outskirts of the Dévaványa municipal area. The centre includes a museum and an area where native domestic animals and live great bustards are displayed. The operator also offers guided visits to protected areas and nature trails. While the churches and museum focus on architectural and local history, the visitor centre puts the emphasis on animals and protected areas.

A recommended cycling route runs through the Dévaványai-Ecsegi puszták. Along one section, cyclists may encounter pheasants, partridges, deer or hares. After two kilometres, the route reaches Csordajárás, the former village common. From there, it continues west and, after another kilometre, reaches the main road between Dévaványa and Kisújszállás via Kossuth utca. Csordajárás is a named waypoint on the route described; the possible wildlife encounters relate to one section of the cycling tour.
