Gyomaendrőd is best explored through two themes: the river landscape of the Hármas-Körös and the local history of fishing, printing, and rural life. These offer different focal points for a stay.
River landscape and activities on the water
The floodplain of the Hármas-Körös, covering more than 2,000 hectares, is a freely accessible nature reserve. At the oxbow lakes lined with willows near Gyomaendrőd, visitors can enjoy swimming, fishing, and water sports; local conditions may vary. For planning purposes, it is helpful to distinguish between the floodplain, which is a freely accessible protected area, and activities at the oxbow lakes, where conditions may vary locally. This way, the natural landscape and water-based leisure opportunities can be considered as separate aspects of the river landscape.
Understanding rivers and fishing
At the Bárka Látogatóközpont, an interactive exhibition presents the regulation and wildlife of the Körös rivers, as well as the history of fishing. The exhibition thus brings together topics in natural history and local history. The Adventure Park of Fishery and History offers a different focus: it presents the history of Gyoma and Endrőd through fishing equipment and written and visual displays. While the Bárka Látogatóközpont brings together the rivers and related topics in one exhibition, the park focuses on the history of both towns. The Adventure Park of Fishery and History can be visited year-round; check the latest visitor information before your visit.
Printing, rural life, and cultural heritage
The Kner Nyomdaipari Múzeum in Gyomaendrőd is an industrial history collection devoted to printing. The Endrődi Tájház offers a different glimpse of the past: peasant furniture and other objects show the living conditions of Endrőd’s rural population in the late 19th century. The two institutions therefore offer distinct perspectives—printing history at one, rural everyday life at the other.
The Endrődi Tájház also hosts a baking event. Visitors can learn how yeast dough pastries are made in a wood-fired oven and try shaping pretzels, crescent rolls, and lángos themselves. Group arrangements apply to the event. The Szent Antal kenyerének sütőháza adds another perspective on cultural heritage: the building was constructed in 1903. Together, these topics offer different perspectives on local history—from collections and peasant life to a historic building and hands-on demonstrations.
More topics to help plan your trip
The Volkswagen Spray Park is a water playground established in Gyomaendrőd in 2018. The XXVII. Gyomaendrődi Nemzetközi Sajt- és Túrófesztivál is also part of the local offering: it is an international cheese and curd cheese festival. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, check the event date in advance.
You can choose what to visit based on your own travel interests, without trying to fit every theme into one itinerary. Those interested in the river landscape and water activities will find different options from visitors who prefer exhibitions, printing history, or rural cultural heritage. If your stay includes several interests, you can consider these themes side by side when planning and take the details of each offering into account.
