Nagybánhegyes offers several specific themes to help you plan your trip: architecture, public spaces and thermal waters. The Protestant church, the buildings nearby, the market square and the central park each represent different aspects of the town. This combination can help you choose the focus of your trip: would you rather explore architectural styles and local history, visit public spaces or learn about the properties of the thermal water? The wider destination of Békés adds further nature and culture topics to this local perspective.

A church and buildings from two eras

The Protestant church was built in 1895 and is considered a heritage building. It was built in the eclectic style and has a tower on its façade and a polygonal apse. Nearby are a small Protestant church and a granary, both built in 1859 in the late Classical style. Both feature a columned portico and a gabled façade. Their dates and styles offer two points of comparison: the nearby buildings date from 1859, while the Protestant church was built in 1895. The transition from late Classicism to eclecticism makes the architectural differences clear.

Square, park and memorial

Nagybánhegyes market square and central park were completed in 2002. The central park has protected trees, described as being around a hundred years old, and a fountain. A memorial to the fallen stands in the main square. Alongside architecture, public spaces and remembrance thus offer distinct themes for a trip.

Thermal water and its composition

The thermal water at the Nagybánhegyes bath is considered particularly rich in minerals. Its water hardness is considered low; its composition includes sodium bicarbonate, as well as methaborate, bromide, iodide and fluoride. Low water hardness and mineral richness are not the same thing: they refer to different properties of the water. The water’s properties therefore offer a distinct focus alongside architectural styles and public spaces.

Nature and culture in the wider destination of Békés

At Körösvölgyi Animal Park, a walking trail of around two kilometres winds through a 26-hectare grove. Along the trail are bird aviaries, animal houses, wetlands and spacious enclosures. The Jégmadár Water Nature Trail starts at the park’s jetty and follows a one-kilometre route along the Szarvas–Békésszentandrás oxbow lake. Eight floating buoy stations introduce visitors to the oxbow lake and its animal and plant life. The route is intended primarily for canoeists and rowboaters without an expert guide, and can only be reached by canoe or boat.

The Sterbetz István Bustard Conservation Visitor Centre is the only place in Hungary where visitors can see great bustards up close. Guided tours, birdwatching, nature photography, themed programmes and astronomy presentations are available there on request. Access is key when choosing an activity: the Jégmadár trail requires a canoe or boat, while the visitor centre’s activities must be requested.
