A cycle path, a memorial monument and two exhibitions offer different ways to explore Újkígyós during a stay. They tell stories of cycling, the history of the town and the Csángó heritage. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing these local themes from other nature and cultural destinations in the wider Békés travel region.

Cycling to Újkígyós

The developed cycle path runs from the eastern edge of Szabadkígyós to Petőfi utca in Újkígyós. It is around six kilometres long in total, of which 4.6 kilometres are within the administrative area of Újkígyós. The two figures therefore describe different sections: the length of the entire route and the part within the municipality.

If you include the route in your plans, check current path conditions before setting off. This makes the approximate total length of around six kilometres a useful guide, without implying anything about conditions on the day of your visit.

Monument and exhibitions in town

The monument to the 1848–49 Revolution and War of Independence stands in Wenckheim Park. It was erected in Újkígyós in 2014 and created to designs by sculptor Gera Katalin. The ensemble consists of a dark grey polished granite block and a bronze flag sculpture. Its steps have a base clad in cream-white limestone slabs.

The exhibitions in Újkígyós also have two distinct focuses. The Ipolyi Arnold Népfőiskola is home to a local history exhibition and a permanent exhibition on the Csángó heritage. If you are planning a visit, check visitor arrangements in advance; opening hours and access conditions are not provided here.

These themes offer different perspectives on the town: the monument commemorates a historical event, the local history exhibition focuses on the area’s past, and the permanent exhibition introduces the Csángó heritage. Together, they provide a cultural complement to the cycle path, without requiring visitors to follow a particular itinerary.

Further nature and cultural themes in the wider Békés travel region

In the wider Békés travel region, Körösvölgyi Animal Park is an example of a nature attraction with a walking trail. It is situated in a 26-hectare grove, and the trail is about two kilometres long. Along the way are bird aviaries, animal houses, wetlands and spacious enclosures. The route therefore takes visitors on foot through several different areas.

In the wider Békés travel region, the Jégmadár Water Nature Trail offers a different way to get around. It starts at the pier of Körösvölgyi Animal Park and follows a one-kilometre stretch of the Szarvas–Békésszentandrás backwater. Eight floating buoy stations share information about the backwater and its flora and fauna. Unlike the walking trail through the grove, this educational trail can only be reached by canoe or boat and is especially suited to canoeists and rowboat users without an expert guide.

The Sterbetz István Bustard Conservation Visitor Centre is located in Réhely, near Dévaványa, in the wider Békés travel region. Visitors can see great bustards at close range only here in Hungary. Guided tours, birdwatching, nature photography, themed programmes and astronomy presentations can be requested. These options are therefore available expressly by request.

Gyula Castle offers a contrast in terms of cultural history in the wider Békés travel region. It was built in the 15th century and is now the only intact lowland brick castle in Central and Eastern Europe. While the monument in Wenckheim Park commemorates the events of 1848–49, the castle takes visitors back to a much earlier period of construction and history.
