Sand grasslands, wildlife and shepherd life form several distinct visitor themes in Bugac. At the Puszta Kapuja InformĂĄciĂłs Központ, the focus is on the ecosystems of the Puszta and the former world of shepherds. The BorĂłka tanösvĂ©ny combines impressions of the landscape with information boards and interactive features; the PĂĄsztormĂșzeum focuses on shepherd life and extensive livestock farming. For planning your visit, the key consideration is the subject matter: would you like to learn more about nature and the landscape, or about history and shepherd culture?
The Puszta and the World of Shepherds at the Information Centre
The Puszta Kapuja InformĂĄciĂłs Központ has two interactive exhibitions. âBugaci buckĂĄk közöttâ presents the wildlife and ecosystems of the Puszta; âPĂĄsztorĂ©letâ depicts the former world of shepherds. The information centre also introduces visitors to the world of sand grasslands. Topics include their characteristic animal and plant species, the history and changes of the landscape, and the everyday lives of people who used to live there. It also explains why local sandy areas have been placed under nature protection and included in the Natura 2000 network. The information centre is located in Bugac, opposite KarikĂĄs CsĂĄrda, and provides a starting point for access to BĂłcsa-Bugac buckavilĂĄga.
Garden and Boróka tanösvény
The garden at the Puszta Kapuja Information Centre has an insect hotel and several games, including an ecological board game. The garden adds another nature-focused element alongside the exhibitions: you can also encounter an ecological theme there in the form of a game.
The Boróka tanösvény is 1,100 metres long. The route features information boards and interactive stations, including a woodland xylophone and a toy telescope. A short section passes small rises and dunes covered with white poplars. One branch of the nature trail forms part of a marked hiking route and has boards about trees and the birdlife of dry sandy forests. The route therefore draws attention both to the shape of the landscape and to its plant and animal life, while the interactive stations offer additional ways to engage with these topics.
The PĂĄsztormĂșzeum: Shepherd Culture and Architecture
The dioramas at the PĂĄsztormĂșzeum present the history and tools of extensive livestock farming, the everyday lives of shepherds and shepherd art. They also depict the animal and plant life of the Bugac Puszta and its sandy forests. Standing alone in the Puszta, the museum is considered a valuable architectural monument and reflects architectural trends of the 1970s. Alongside the information centreâs nature themes, it offers a distinct perspective on the cultural history of the landscape.
Other Places and Historical Periods
At the Szerzetesek kertje at the Aranymonostor LĂĄtogatĂłközpont, you can stroll among herbs and medicinal plants. The PĂ©ter and PĂĄl monasteries offer a different historical connection: they stood in the area of present-day Bugac, but little has been recorded about them in documents. This sparse historical record contrasts with the more extensively presented topics at the information centre and the PĂĄsztormĂșzeum.
More Cultural Heritage in BĂĄcs-Kiskun
In BĂĄcs-Kiskun, the TiszaalpĂĄr, FöldvĂĄr nature trail presents the history of the Bronze Age fortification of TiszaalpĂĄri FöldvĂĄr and the way of life of people in the Bronze Age. A reconstruction of an ĂrpĂĄd-era village in TiszaalpĂĄr shows a different historical period. It was built to mark the millennium and represents the settlement layout discovered in local excavations.
