Baja / Frankenstadt can be explored through its distinctive contrasts: at Szentháromság tér, the city’s history meets views of the river landscape. Museums and galleries focus on art, archaeology and regional life, while the Sugovica and Danube offer additional waterside activities. When planning your trip, you can choose different focuses rather than trying to fit every experience into a set itinerary.
Square, Monument and Landscape
Szentháromság tér is Baja’s main square. It takes its name from the Holy Trinity statue at its center, erected in the 18th century to commemorate the city’s liberation from plague epidemics. From the western side of the square, the view extends over the Sugovica, the opposite Petőfi-sziget and the surrounding natural landscape. The same place thus offers both a historical landmark and views of the river and landscape. The Bajai Halfőző Fesztivál is also held at Szentháromság tér and has become a tradition. If the festival is important to your trip, check the current dates and program separately.
Museums and Art in Baja
According to the permanent exhibition description from January 2020, the Türr-István-Museum included prehistoric finds, finds from the Migration Period and Avar period, and a fully excavated Sarmatian cemetery considered unique in Europe. The ethnographic exhibition preserves an extensive textile collection, including the traditional dress of the ethnic communities of North Bácska. The Éber Memorial House focuses on the artistic legacy of painters Sándor Éber senior, Sándor Éber junior and Anna Éber.
Since 1985, the art collection of the Nagy-István-Galerie has been housed in a former Neoclassical Vojnich mansion. It features paintings by Nagy István and works by contemporary artists from North Bácska and the local area. According to a tourist description, the program includes three to four temporary exhibitions each year, featuring works from the Oltványi Collection, members of the Rudnay Artists’ Colony and the Bajai Nagy István Művészeti Egyesület. For specific visiting hours and the current exhibition program, it is advisable to check the latest information.
Fisherfolk and Waterside Activities
On the banks of the Danube, where the Sugovica and Danube meet, the Halászati Miniskanzen presents the traditional way of life by the water, the daily lives of fishermen and their tools. Children can enjoy folk games and craft activities. The skansen also includes a working ship mill on the Danube, powered by the current. It is the only one of its kind along the entire navigable stretch of the Danube and is open to the public seasonally.
During the summer season, the exhibitions at the Halászati Miniskanzen can be visited for four hours each day. Groups are welcomed by prior arrangement. Check the current opening hours before your visit. Facilities at Baja’s Sugovica free beach include changing rooms, a sun terrace, a playground and a slide. As facilities may change, it is a good idea to check local information in advance.
The Mogyi Bajai Vízisport Klub organizes camps, family days and corporate events; visitors can also take part in water tours. Ask the club directly about current availability. For a different perspective on the water, there are evening concerts and performances at the marina, which also serves as a waterside stage with a floating multimedia fountain. The program is seasonal; check current dates in advance.
Antal Pincészet also welcomes visitor groups who can learn about everyday life at the winery. Alongside art, city history and waterside activities, visitors can also choose a group-focused introduction to winemaking.
