Location and Getting to Brick Bay
Brick Bay is located between Coxen Hole and French Harbour on Roatan. The town has a local ferry terminal with service to the Honduran mainland. For your accommodation search, the location between the island’s two towns and the terminal provide concrete reference points. According to the Roatan Tourism Bureau, cruise ships may dock in Brick Bay. If a crossing is part of your itinerary, check the current schedule before finalizing your plans.
Roatan as a Cultural Travel Destination
Roatan, the wider travel destination, also has cultural and historical significance: The Roatan Museum was founded in 1992 by the resort’s owners, with guidance and expertise from the Honduran Institute of Anthropology. It presents the history and culture of the Bay Islands through artifacts, murals, maps, and historical documents. Punta Gorda is considered the arrival point of the Garifuna in Central America: the ship that brought them there arrived after the English transported them from San Vicente following their rebellion. Punta Gorda’s predominantly Garifuna population has long been associated with artisanal fishing. The Punta Gorda Carnival is described as a celebration held in April and associated with Garifuna traditions, as well as Punta music and dance. Together, the museum’s historical materials and Punta Gorda’s historical Garifuna story, fishing tradition, and April celebration offer different ways to experience the culture.
Nature and Educational Activities on Roatan
Roatan offers beaches and lush coastal vegetation. Orchids, medicinal plants, exotic spice plants, fruit and nut trees, and a Chocolate Tree grow in the Carambola Botanical Garden. The garden also offers hiking, ecotours, birdwatching, and nature studies. Arch’s Iguana and Marine Park is a wildlife sanctuary dedicated to protecting coral and marine life. The tourism board reports that more than 4,000 iguanas roam freely in the park. The two attractions have different focuses: the garden centers on plant diversity and nature studies alongside its activities, while the park is dedicated to protecting marine habitats.
The Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences (RIMS) welcomes colleges, universities, and high schools from abroad for educational visits throughout the year. Its structured programs cover marine science, coral reefs, oceanography, biology, tropical marine ecosystems, and bottlenose dolphins. This focus is explicitly aimed at educational groups, setting it apart from the island destination’s botanical and cultural themes.
Getting There and Choosing a Base
Visitors can reach Roatan by scheduled flights, cruise ships, domestic flights from the mainland, and a ferry from La Ceiba. These options give you several ways to get to the island; choosing Brick Bay, by contrast, is about the location and the local ferry terminal. Before traveling, check the current routes and times for your chosen mode of transport. If a crossing to the Honduran mainland is part of your plans, also check the ferry schedule before settling on your accommodation and other stops. This lets you weigh your journey to Roatan separately from the location you want for your accommodation.
