Panajachel lies on the shore of Lake Atitlán and offers views of the Tolimán, Atitlán and San Pedro volcanoes. At the same time, Calle Santander has become the center of tourist activity. Here, a landscape of lake and volcanoes meets a diverse range of cultural attractions and activities. If you are considering Panajachel as a place to stay, you can start by deciding whether views, history or outdoor pursuits should be your priority.

Views and Outdoor Spots

Mirador Ventana del Tiempo is at the end of Calle Santander and offers panoramic views of Lake Atitlán at sunrise and sunset. Corazón Pana tu Destino offers a different perspective: its heart-shaped platform provides a spot for panoramic photos of the surrounding volcanoes. Mirador Xecumuc has mountain hiking trails, natural caves and swings. The viewpoints therefore differ in what they offer: a lake panorama at two times of day, photos of the surrounding volcanoes, or several natural and recreational features at another mirador.

The activities also offer different experiences. In Panajachel, birdwatching can start early in the day. When paragliding, you will be accompanied by an experienced pilot. An ATV tour starts at a Yamaha shop in Panajachel and follows the town’s streets to the Río San Francisco. This gives you a choice between starting early to observe nature and different ways to get active. As you plan your day, consider whether you would like to spend the morning birdwatching, take a four-wheeled tour or go paragliding.

Playa PĂşblica Los Salpores is a beach in a natural setting. You can swim there and walk along the shore. This makes a visit to the water different from the viewpoints and tours: the focus here is the shore and activities right on the lake.

History, Maya Culture and Art

The colonial church of Panajachel dates back to the 16th century. Its cultural features include an altarpiece and an image of Saint Francis of Assisi. The Panajachel municipal library includes a museum with photographs of Panajachel in the past and artifacts relating to the community’s history. The church and library museum thus offer different ways to explore local history: through a historic building and through photographs and objects from the community.

The Museo Jabel Kotzij is dedicated to the Maya culture of Panajachel and features the Maya queens who have represented the community. It also presents the development of Panajachel residents’ traditional clothing. The Capishay is also associated with clothing: it signified social standing or a particular office and is now worn exclusively by Cofrades. Galería Ixchel displays works by people taking part in a national painting competition. Taken together, these cultural offerings provide different perspectives on Panajachel—from clothing and community history to art and religious furnishings.

Market and Seasonal Produce

The outdoor area of Mercado Municipal sells seasonal vegetables, fruit, edible herbs, medicinal plants, flowers and legumes. Kitchen utensils and handmade furniture are also available there. Seasonal produce offers a different focus from these household goods: during your market visit, you can look out for both plant-based products and items for the home.
