El Naranjo brings together river connections and archaeological sites whose names and descriptions are clearly distinct. La Playita is on the Río San Pedro; La Florida-Namaan and El Naranjo-Frontera each have their own location and date information. When planning your trip, it is worth first clarifying which site is meant and which of the boat destinations interests you.
River and Location Orientation
La Playita is a beach on the Río San Pedro in Aldea El Naranjo. The modern village of El Naranjo lies on a transit route to the Mexican border. The riverside beach and the village’s location on the route therefore provide two distinct points of reference for the area. When looking for a vacation rental, you can first consider whether the river connections, archaeological sites, or boat destinations will be the focus of your trip.
Archaeological Sites and Their Names
La Florida-Namaan lies on both banks of the Río San Pedro Mártir in the municipality of El Naranjo, Aldea de La Libertad, Petén. The archaeological site consists of at least three distinct groups arranged along the river. The largest group is in the village and is called Grupo El Naranjo. The name therefore refers to a single group within the site; La Florida-Namaan is the name of the archaeological site.
El Naranjo-Frontera is a different archaeological site. It lies 60 m above sea level on the southern bank of the Río San Pedro Mártir, in the administrative area of La Libertad, Petén. It was inhabited from the Preclassic through the Terminal Classic and reached its greatest flourishing in the Late Classic. The long period of habitation and the period of particular flourishing are two different details: the first describes the time span, the second its peak. The addition “Frontera” distinguishes this site from an archaeological site of the same name in the administrative area of Melchor de Mencos, Petén.
Planning Boat Destinations
From El Naranjo, visitors can travel by boat to Estación Biológica Las Guacamayas. Visitors can also travel by boat from El Naranjo to the archaeological site of El Peru-Waka. The destinations offer different points of focus: a biological station and an archaeological site. Check current departures before including either trip as a fixed part of your plans. This lets you consider the boat destinations separately and tailor your trip to your preferred focus.
Petén in a Broader Context
In the broader destination of Petén, Parque Nacional Tikal covers 57,600 hectares of wetlands, savannas, and tropical broadleaf and palm forests. It is home to thousands of architectural and artistic remains of the Maya civilization. Their time span ranges from the Preclassic period (600 BC) to the decline and eventual collapse of the urban center around AD 900. The park’s wildlife includes five cat species, including jaguars and pumas, several species of monkeys and anteaters, and more than 300 bird species.
Ruta del Mundo Maya is also located in the Departamento del Petén. Its archaeological sites tell the story of more than 2,500 years of settlement, while the region’s humid tropical rainforests provide habitat for many plant and animal species. In the broader destination of Petén, an international fishing tournament is held every year on the Río San Pedro Mártir. If this event matters to your trip, check the dates for the relevant year.
