A trip to Chiquimula offers a variety of cultural and scenic points of interest: religious celebrations on specific dates, several named churches, and places within the municipality. If you are looking for accommodation for a set travel period, you can first check whether January, August, or December 12 better suits your plans. If you are less tied to a particular date, you can take your cue from the churches and historical places of interest.

Festivals on Different Dates

The celebration in honor of Jesús Nazareno del Calvario, also called Padre Jesús del Calvario, takes place in January. It ends with a solemn procession that passes through a large part of the historic center and several neighborhoods of Chiquimula. The patronal festival in honor of the Virgen del Tránsito takes place annually from August 12 to 18; August 15 is its main day. Unlike the January celebration, the August festival therefore has a clearly specified period and a highlighted day.

If you want to choose your travel dates around a particular event, you can use this distinction. If you are traveling for a festival, it is a good idea to check the specific schedule of the celebration in advance. On December 12, many parents celebrate the Virgen de Guadalupe by dressing their children in traditional Guatemalan attire. The celebration also includes a procession from the Iglesia del Calvario to the Iglesia Parroquial in Chiquimula. The December event thus combines a family tradition with a specific procession route.

Churches and Buildings in the City

The colonial parish church of Nuestra Señora del Tránsito is located in El Calvario and houses, among other things, the image of Jesús Nazareno. The Iglesia Vieja stands out from the contemporary buildings surrounding it. The sites differ in their features: the parish church is notable for the image it houses, while the Iglesia Vieja stands out in contrast to its architectural surroundings.

The Torre de Reformador is located in Barrio el Ángel. Together with the parish church in El Calvario, it offers different points of interest within the city.

Other Places in the Municipality

The municipality of Chiquimula also has named places with their own historical or scenic significance. The Ermita de Santa Elena was built in the 18th century and is located in the village of the same name. A small forest lies between the church and the Shutaque River. Here, a historic building meets a described relationship between forest and river.

Laguna del Jute is located near the destination, in the community of El Jute in the municipality of Chiquimula. It adds a scenic point of interest to the churches and religious dates. If you would like to consider the surrounding area as well as places in the city when planning your trip, you can treat Laguna as a separate geographical point of reference.
