Explore Hagåtña through different highlights: historic sites with specific connections to the city’s history, and the offerings at Chamorro Village. The Hagåtña Heritage Walking Trail adds a clearly stated walking distance of 2.5 miles (4 km) to this selection. This lets you decide whether to focus your stay more on cultural history, a walk, or market, food, and handicraft offerings.

Historic Sites and Their Stories

In the 1660s, the Spanish colonial government designated the site of Plaza de España as Plaza Principál. The Azotea is the last surviving architectural element of the Governor’s Palace. The Almacen Arches also point to an earlier function: they once formed the entrance to a royal warehouse built in 1736. The Azotea and the arches therefore offer different ways to explore Hagåtña’s architectural heritage.

The Chocolate House represents a different type of use. The Spanish and American administrations used it for meriendas, where drinks and pastries were served. Those interested in the history of buildings can learn not only about the former functions of the palace and warehouse, but also about a tradition of hospitality.

The Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica has another historic connection: in 1669, Chief Kepuha gave Father Luis Diego de San Vitores the land on which the church stands. It was intended for the construction of Guam’s first Roman Catholic church. Visitors can also see eight latte stones at Angel Santos Memorial Park. These places offer different opportunities to explore Hagåtña’s history and landmarks.

Heritage Walking Trail and Landmarks

The Hagåtña Heritage Walking Trail is 2.5 miles (4 km) long. Its stated length is a concrete planning figure if you’d like to include a walk in your stay. Along the trail, next to San Antonio Bridge, stands a statue of Sirena, Guam’s legendary mermaid. The bridge and statue together provide a distinct, clearly identified landmark along the trail.

Chamorro Village: Food, Handicrafts, and Performances

Chamorro Village offers handicrafts and gift items, as well as local and international food. These cater to different interests: you can explore craftwork, souvenirs, or a selection of dishes, without these being presented as the same experience.

Local performances are scheduled throughout the evening at the Wednesday Night Market. If you want to plan your visit specifically around this market, check the events calendar before your trip. Carabao rides are also offered near Chamorro Village. This activity is an offering in the surrounding area, not part of the Village itself.

Highlights for Your Stay

For your planning, you can consider the historical connections, the walking distance, and the offerings at Chamorro Village as separate highlights. The historic sites tell stories of former functions, names, and building projects; the trail has a stated length; and the Village brings together food, handicrafts, gift items, and performances. Consider which of these themes matter most for your trip. If the evening market is part of your plans, coordinate your visit with the events calendar rather than assuming it is a fixed program item.
