An art museum at the marina, a gallery with collection pieces from different eras, and a landscape of trails, salt ponds and wild beaches offer different ways to explore Saint-Francois. There is also a market selling local produce and a short viewpoint walk at Anse Ă la Gourde. When choosing a holiday rental for your stay, you can focus on art, nature or a mix of both.
Art and History
The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Saint-François was founded in 2017 and is located at the marina. It comprises seven rooms and a gallery. Its collection spans the 16th century to the present, with paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures. Its thematic scope includes traditional and contemporary art, as well as photography and other visual arts. This brings together a broad historical span and a range of artistic media. The collection provides a permanent framework; individual exhibitions may change.
Kreol West Indies is an art gallery and museum on the road to Pointe des Châteaux. The site includes a 2,000 m² outdoor exhibition area and a 400 m² building. It showcases works by 50 artists and more than 350 pieces, including pre-Columbian tools and navigation instruments used by privateers. The gallery brings contemporary art together with historical heritage and presents 4,000 years of Caribbean history. Temporary exhibitions and cultural events complement the offering; the programme may change.
The two art venues have different focuses: the Musée des Beaux-Arts spans the period from the 16th century to the present through its collection. Kreol West Indies places Caribbean history and heritage alongside contemporary art. Another art venue is Lili Galerie ART at Pointe des Châteaux. Painter Amandine Uger founded and runs a studio and art gallery there, showcasing contemporary art.
Landscape and Views
The Pointe des Châteaux is characterised by more than 10 km of trails, wild beaches and salt ponds, as well as endemic plants and migratory birds. This makes the area a natural contrast to the art collections and the market. The trails and the landscape features described offer a distinct focus when deciding how you would like to spend your time in Saint-Francois.
At Anse à la Gourde in Saint-Francois, the walk at Pointe à Cabrits leads to a purpose-built platform after just a few minutes. From there, the view extends to îlet de l’Éperon, across northern Grande-Terre, towards Pointe Tarare and further out to Île de la Désirade. The path is described as accessible to everyone. Check local trail conditions before your visit.
Marais de la Pointe Gros-Bœuf is also part of Saint-Francois’s natural character: the wetland received the Aire Terrestre Éducative designation in 2020.
Market and Other Activities
The Marché de Saint-François offers a different taste of local life: tropical fruits, local vegetables, spices, homemade jams, flavoured rums, fresh fish and local handicrafts. The selection may vary by day and vendor. The market adds regional produce and goods to the art and nature themes, without requiring you to plan a fixed itinerary.
For another activity, you can try paintball at Reef Rider Park in Belle-Allée. The activity is available by reservation during the day and at night. As operating details may change, check the latest information with the provider beforehand.
Saint-Francois can therefore be explored through different interests: art from historical collections to contemporary work, landscapes and viewpoints, or market offerings and an activity that requires a reservation. This thematic focus can help guide your choice of holiday rental without turning your stay into a fixed itinerary.
